Buyer's Guide - Photo Enforcement Defense
With tax revenues down and expenses going up, cities are looking for more ways to bring in income.
Many are turning to photo enforcement devices such as speed cameras or red light cameras.
There are two approaches to avoiding a ticket from a photo enforcement camera:
- A GPS based radar detector or device. These devices have an integrated database of
camera locations and they alert you as you approach a camera in the same way a radar detector
would alert you when you approach a police radar gun. These devices are very effective. The
drawbacks are that you have to keep the database up to date by connecting the device to your
computer, and that they are not very good at identifying cameras that are moved frequently.
- Anti-photo license plate covers. These devices work by making your license plate
unreadable by a photo enforcement camera. Drawbacks are that they are not 100% effective and
are illegal in some areas.
