Whistler Pro 78 / XTR-690 Update Is Ready!

Whistler has officially announced that their firmware update for the Pro 78 and XTR-690 radar detectors is now ready! As we mentioned previously, this firmware update offers a few usability improvements as well as K and Ka band performance enhancements when POP mode is disabled.

Since the Whistler XTR-690 and Pro 78 detectors already offer great performance against technology used in the United States, it is likely that only the more hard-core users or professional drivers would find it worthwhile to have a unit upgraded. Some customers from outside the US will see a larger benefit, as performance has also been improved (with POP mode off) for Ka frequencies that are used primarily in Europe (34.0 Ghz and 34.3 Ghz).

There will be a flat fee of $20 charged to upgrade a detector to this latest firmware version (Revision 'C'). This fee covers the cost of the upgrade, processing, and handling. For more information about the new functionality provided by this upgrade, and information about where to send a unit that you need upgraded, check out Veil Guy's Whistler upgrade summary.

Please be aware that this firmware update was just finalized, so Whistler is not yet shipping Revision 'C' units to dealers. We do not have a date yet as to when we will have units the latest version in stock, but we will make an announcement here on the blog as soon as they arrive.

Whistler Pro 78 / XTR 690 Firmware Update

UPDATED: This new firmware version is not yet available, as Whistler is currently in the process of making some final tweaks. We will know as soon as the update as available, and will let you know immediately. Check back frequently for updates.

Whistler is close to releasing a firmware update for the XTR-690 and the Pro 78. This update will provides several improvements:

  • Improved K and Ka sensitivity with POP mode OFF

  • Auto Display Dimming feature improved on the Pro 78. A delay has been added to prevent the display from adjusting when light changes suddenly, such as when driving through a shadowed area.

  • The display now "holds" an alert for a few seconds after the signal is lost. During brief alerts, like are seen when a signal is weak, the display would previously reset quickly not providing the driver enough time to identify the band.

Whistler has done a great job in making these improvements, specifically with the K and Ka sensitivity. The display dimming and alert hold issues were first brought up just a few weeks ago in Veil Guy's review of these detectors. I'm truly impressed with how fast Whistler moved to make the improvements.

Veil Guy has received XTR-690 and Pro 78 units with the new firmware, and has already updated his review. He found that the Ka sensitivity (with POP mode detection OFF) was now similar to that of the Bel STi Driver, and even outperformed the STi in some cases.

We are expecting to have units with the new firmware in stock soon, but if you purchased a model with the original firmware you're not out of luck! Whistler is willing to provide current XTR-690 / Pro 78 owners with the update, just call their support number (800-531-0004) to arrange sending in your detector, once the update is available.

Veil Guy: Whistler Pro 78 / XTR-690 Review

The Veil Guy stopped by our offices a couple of weeks ago on his way to Atlanta. While he was here, he picked up a few radar detectors to test during his return trip. Among the models he chose were the Whistler Pro 78 and the Whistler XTR-690.

Over the weekend, he posted a very detailed review of these two models. Here's a quote:

In any event, it is my opinion that these new Whistlers represent two of the greatest values in radar detector ownership, today.

If it is your desire to have a full-featured radar detector which provides good protection against police radar, particularly against Ka-band, and are budget minded, you need not look further than either the Whistler Pro-78 or Whistler XTR-690.

Please check out the entire review, it is definitely the most in-depth look at these Whistler models to date.

Whistler XTR-690: Now Shipping!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we just received our first shipment of the (much anticipated) Whistler XTR-690 radar detector. We are hoping to get all backorders out today, but any backorder that doesn't go out today will ship Monday. Shipping was held up on these units because of a packaging delay, and because Whistler was finalizing a program to help ensure that only authorized dealers (like us!) are able to sell their products.

April 16, 2007

Whistler Pro 78: Now Shipping!

The much anticipated Whistler Pro 78 radar detector arrived today, and are now shipping! If you had placed a preorder with us for this model, then your order shipped today and you should have received an email with your tracking number.

For those that aren't aware, the Whistler Pro 78 has the same re-engineered performance of the (much anticipated) XTR-690, and will replace the current Pro 73. Unlike the XTR-690, the Pro 78 will not have a compass, but it will have a better (intense blue text) display and auto display dimming. Like the XTR-690, it will offer a 3 year warranty.

Whistler's Dual LED Alert Periscope

With Whistler's new 2007 models, they are introducing a new feature called the "Dual LED Alert Periscope". The new models have two blue LED's positioned on top, near the rear of the detector. By default, these LEDs will flash rapidly during an alert.

The feedback that we've gotten from customers since we first announced this feature has been mixed. Some love, some think it will be annoying, and many are indifferent. One customer said that he was looking forward to it because he is hard of hearing, and sometimes he is unable to hear alerts. He was hoping that the flashing would be bright enough to catch his attention.

Since we just received our first shipment of the new models, I was excited to take a look at this new feature. On all models except for the XTR-140, there are three modes for this setting: ON, OFF, and BLINKING. Those who find the flashing lights annoying will like the OFF option. In ON, the LEDs are always on -- not just during an alert -- and are steady. With the BLINKING option, the lights are off until the detector alerts, and then the LEDs flash -- this option is the default.

I have not done a true road test with these Whistler radar detectors yet, but I did snap a few pictures with the lights off and on to get a sense of how visible the LEDs would be. My impression is that in the light the LEDs would be noticeable, but probably not enough to be counted on to grab you attention 100% of the time. At night, however, they stand out very well and would definitely grab your attention.

I will test out one of these models in my car for a few days and update these results. Also, I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Four New Whistler Models Now Available

We just received 4 of Whistler's new 2007 models: the XTR-500, XTR-330, XTR-260, and XTR-140. These are now in stock and ready to ship. A brief breakdown of the feature differences between these new models was provided in a previous blog post. The much anticipated XTR-690 and Pro 78 are not yet available, but are due in mid-April.

I think the look of these new models is much improved from previous models. The detectors are fairly small with a crisp, clean look. Here's a pic of the new XTR-500:

Whistler XTR-500

And here is a pic that shows the size difference compared to an XTR-325 and a DE-1734. A $10 bill is included as a frame of reference.

We're looking forward to receiving some feedback from customers on these new models, and will be sure to pass it on when as receive it!

CES 2007: Whistler's New Lineup

We've already broke the news about the XTR-690, but today we were able to get a look at the entire lineup of new Whistler detectors. Whistler did not have any working models, only prototypes, so I was not able to take any pictures.

Whistler has 8 models that they consider "New for 2007", two of which are already available: the XTR-185 and XTR-190. All current models starting with "DE" other than the 1788 will be slowly phased out. The XTR-425 will be discontinued as well.

There are 6 new, unreleased "XTR" series models: the 690, 500, 330, 260, and 140. These models have a new design that really looks great. They are smaller and look more streamlined than last years models (325, 425, 560), and all generally look similar to the image that we have up for the XTR-690. All of the new models have the "periscope" alert LED's, which are two alert lights on the top of the detector.

A new Pro series model, the Whistler Pro 78, will replace the Pro 73 and have the same re-engineered performance of the XTR-690. These two models are slightly larger than the others, and will be the only models to offer the improved performance.

The following is a basic feature summary of each new model.

XTR-690 - See this page.

Pro 78 - Same features of the XTR-690, but no compass. The Pro 78 will have an intense blue text display like the Pro 73, and will feature "auto-dim"

XTR-500 - Red text display, voice alerts, POP mode detection.

XTR-330 - Icon display with red numeric signal strength meter, POP mode detection, voice alerts.

XTR-260 - Icon display with blue numeric signal strength meter, dual alert display.

XTR-140 - Low end model. Similar in features to the current DE-1733 except that it will offer 3 city modes.

UPDATE 3/14/07 - The following models are now in stock: XTR-500, XTR-330, XTR-260, XTR-140

UPDATE 4/16/07 - Whistler Pro 78 now in stock.

Whistler XTR-690 Pre-Order Update

Thanks to everyone who inquired today about pre-ordering the Whistler XTR-690. Unfortunately, there are still a few pricing issues that need to be worked through, so we've decided to wait until after CES (Jan. 8-11) to offer pre-ordering through the web site. MSRP will definitely be $229.95, but there is still some question as to what the actual retail price will be.

I have also updated the previous post with a correction, and some info that I left off yesterday.

Whistler XTR-690: Re-engineered Performance

In less than two weeks, at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Whistler will announce the new XTR-690 radar detector. This new detector will sport a re-engineered antenna which, according to Whistler, will deliver range very similar to that of a high-end Bel or Escort model. The best news is that this new model will sell for around half the price of a Bel / Escort! This kind of performance has been simply unheard of in this price range, making this a potentially far-reaching announcement.

Obviously we have to remain somewhat skeptical until the performance can be independently verified, but the Whistler technician that I have spoken with seems very confident. They have tested prototypes of the new engine against Bel / Escort models, and found the performance to be similar.

Performance aside, the XTR-690 will also differ physically from previous XTR series models. Take a look at the following drawing:

No, those are not dual rear "laser eyes" near the back of the detector. The second "eye" is a "periscope" alert LED, an interesting new attempt to grab your attention when you get an alert. The buttons will be laser etched, which is a nice touch. The 690 will not support the colored "trim rings" that could be used with some other models. The display will be blue backlit with black text like is currently found on the XTR-425, XTR-560, and 1788:

Other new features include a battery voltage meter, and true VG-2 immunity (instead of cloaking).

The expected availability date for the XTR-690 will be April 2. We have an arrangement with Whistler, and will begin accepting pre-orders for this model very soon. More on that in the coming days.

UPDATE (12.28.06): Yesterday, I mentioned that the XTR-690 would have one "periscope" alert LED opposite the rear laser sensor. This is correct but, in addition, the rear laser sensor will also function as an alert LED, giving the 690 dual "periscope" alert LEDs.

We have also received several questions asking if false alerts would be reduced. A Whistler technician has confirmed that we will see fewer falses with the XTR-690.

Whistler SRT Specials

Well, the holiday shopping season is now over but don't let that stop you from taking advantage of this special! We have the Whistler SRT-30R and Whistler SRT-35R radar detectors available now at $34.99 and $39.99, respectively. These models were created exclusively for Radio Shack, and sold there for as much as $80. Radio Shack was not able to sell as many as they planned, so we took advantage of an opportunity to pick them up at a great price. Of course, we're passing the savings on to you.

The SRT-30R is a very basic model, similar in performance and features to the DE-1732. The SRT-35R is a slightly larger model that ads a bright icon display and 3 city modes, comparable to the DE-1734C. If you're in the market for a budget detector, this deal is for you.

New Cordless Models From Whistler Now Available

We now have the Whistler XTR-185 and XTR-190 cordless, rechargeable radar detectors available. These new models are sure to be popular, as they offer the same performance as the Whistler 1788 cordless detector, but sell for less.

These two new models are identical with the exception of the XTR-185's solar panel. This solar panel, a first for radar detectors, allows the light from the sun to extend the detector's battery life. According to Whistler the XTR-185 typically provides around 17 hours of battery life, compared to 15 for the XTR-190.

The 1788 is still Whistler's top-end cordless detector, as it provides several nice features that are missing from these new models. The 1788 offers a nicer display (back-lit text display vs. icon), selectable bands, and includes a home charger. The biggest difference may be in battery life - the 1788 accepts 4 AA rechargeable batteries (the new models accept 3) and provides up to 20 hours of battery life.

Holiday Special: Whistler DE-1793SE

Our holiday special for 2006 has arrived, and it's a good one! While supplies last, we will be offering the Whistler DE-1793 SE radar detector for only $99! The DE-1793 is the most feature packed detector detector in Whistler's line up. It detects POP mode radar, has a text display, voice alerts, digital compass and even a memo recorder! It delivers great range, though not as much as you would get from a high end Bel or Escort detector. As an added bonus, this model also includes a black travel bag and a cigarette lighter splitter.

This model normally sells for $150, and the suggested retail price is over $200! We expect these to sell out before Christmas, so don't wait to order.

Whistler Fuzion Now Available

We now have the Whistler Fuzion in stock. This new model is very similar to the Cruisader motorcycle detector, but it is equipped to be installed in a regular vehicle. The Cruisader was a popular model with "tuners" who liked that it would fit in a pillar gauge pod, but there were a few issues since it was intended to be installed on a bike. Whistler saw this as an opportunity, and now we have the Fuzion.

The Fuzion isn't just a Cruisader with longer cables, it does offer a couple of enhancements. It includes a voice module, which means it provides your choice of voice or tone alerts. It also provides a programmable display, similar to the XTR-425 and XTR-560 windshield mount models.

Whistler XTR-280

We have received a couple of emails now asking about the Whistler XTR-280. This model is yet another version of the Whistler 1788, made for specific retailers. The XTR-280 is identical to the Whistler 1788 that we sell. Unlike some other versions, it does include the home charger.

Whistler DE-1732 Now Available

We now have the Whistler DE-1732 radar detector in stock. This detector is identical to the Whistler DE-1730, the only difference is the look. The tool that Whistler used to create the 1730's casing had worn out, so they created a new one. Eventually, the 1730 will no longer be available, but as long as it is, we will continue to carry it.

So, if you are looking at one of these low-end Whistler radar detectors, just choose the design that you think looks best. There is no other difference between them!

Whistler XTR Series

After receiving a couple of shipments with only enough units to fill backorders, I'm happy to say that we now have (what should be) plenty of new Whistler XTR series radar detectors in stock. All XTR models are now in stock: XTR-220, XTR-325, XTR-425, XTR-520, and XTR-560. If you had one of these models on backorder with us, you should have already received an email with your tracking information.

Also, the manuals for each of these models are now available online. Just click the "Owners Manual" link at the top of each detector's product page.

(Some) New Whistler Models In Stock

Obviously we didn't order enough of these models! We received our first shipment of the Whistler XTR series detectors yesterday. Within just a few hours, we were out of stock on the XTR-325, XTR-425, and XTR-560. The XTR-220 and XTR-520 weren't added to the site until today, and we still have a few of each of these models left.

We expect a second shipment to arrive next week so if you're waiting on one of the new models, check back soon!

International Whistler Sales

Whistler just issued a warning to customers outside of the US who are looking to buy a Whistler detector: BEWARE. Some internet searches apparently turn up products that claim to be Whistler radar detectors, but in fact are not. Here are two examples (one, two).

International customers: always be sure that the Whistler products that you buy are authentic!

Different Versions of the Whistler 1788

It has been brought to my attention that there are some stores selling the Whistler 1788 cordless radar detector considerably cheaper than BuyRadarDetectors.com. I did a little research, and just wanted to let everyone know that this cheaper version is a little different than the package that we are selling. Whistler 1788's that come from us include a home battery charger. This home charger is not included in the "cheaper" package.

New Whistler Radar Detectors - Details

I have received more detailed information on the new 2006 Whistler models. They have some very interesting models coming out, with some features that are truly new to the radar detector world.

All of the 2006 models are part of a new series, called the "XTR Series". This XTR series seems to break down into two sets of detectors. For lack of a better name, I'll call them the "Changeable Trim Models" and the "Remote Control Models".

One thing that seems to be common to all XTR models is a different type of text display. All of the models with an alpha-numeric text display have the same blue-back-lit display of the Whistler 1788 cordless detector. Prior to the 1788, Whistler detectors had always had red or blue text on a black background.

While there is no definite release date, we are hoping to have these models in stock in April.

Changeable Trim Models

The XTR-325, XTR-425, and XTR-560 detectors make up the set that I'm calling the "Changeable Trim Models". These models are all shaped similar to previous higher end Whistler detectors such as the Pro 73, but they have added a plastic trim ring to the top of the detector. The trim ring can be switched out with different colored rings. Three rings are included with each model.

All of these models will detect the Ku band. Whistler doesn't believe that the Ku band will be a threat in the US in the near future, so they are not planning to promote the Ku feature. By default, detection of the Ku band will enabled in these models, however it is user selectable and can be disabled.

All of these models are compatible with the programmable Intelli-Cord.

Two of these models offer programmable alerts. The XTR-425 has a programmable text display, which means you can change the text CITY or HIGHWAY (or a few others) to say anything you want, within certain limitations (8 characters or less). The XTR-560 also has programmable audio alerts. This will let you record your own alert tones and assign it to any band, replacing the internal alerts.

Here's a little more about each model:

The XTR-325 has voice alerts, an icon display with numeric signal strength indicator, and includes red, blue, and gold trim rings. MSRP is $129.95. Our site will probably have it initially priced at $89.99.

The XTR-425 also has voice alerts, but adds a programmable text display. White, silver, and red trim rings are included. MSRP is $139.95. Our initial price will likely be $99.99.

The XTR-560 is the top of the line XTR model, adding programmable voice alerts to the programmable text display. The included trim rings are black, blue, and pink. MSRP is $199.95 but we will probably have it for $139.99.

XTR-325 XTR-425 XTR-560

Remote Control Models

The XTR-220 and the XTR-520 are targeted at customers driving vehicles with a hard-to-reach windshield. Instead of stretching to reach the detector, they can control all of the major functions from a key chain remote. With no buttons on top of the detector, these two detectors have a look different from previous Whistler models.

These models will not detect the Ku band, nor will they be compatible with the Intelli-Cord. At this time, no other models will be "remote compatible".

The XTR-220 has an icon display with numeric signal strength indicator. MSRP is $119.95. Our site will probably have it initially priced at $79.99.

The XTR-520 adds voice alerts and a text display. MSRP is $159.95, but our price will likely start at $109.99.

FuZion Installed Detector

The new FuZion radar detector is basically a Whistler Cruisader that is made for regular vehicles. Like the Cruisader, the FuZion will fit in a standard 2 1/16 gauge or pillar enclosure. People love this about the Cruisader, so it should be a big hit with the FuZion. The FuZion will not detect the Ku band.

That's all for now, but I will provide more information on these new models when I receive it!

Whistler Cruisader In A Car?

People just love the fact that the Whistler Cruisader radar detector can be mounted in a standard 2 1/16 inch gauge enclosure! Since this is the only detector on this market with this feature, we are always getting asked if the Cruisader will work in a car, as well as a motorcycle.

The answer is yes, you can use a Cruisader in a car, but there are a couple of things to watch out for.

The most frequent problem is the wire length. The wires attached to the radar antenna, the control panel, and the additional laser receiver are each 10 feet in length. This should be plenty for most vehicles, but is too short in some.

Another issue may be that the installation guide is written with a motorcycle installation in mind. It may help to refer to the Whistler Pro 3450 installation guide for tips on things to look for in a typical vehicle installation.

Article on 2006 Whistler And Cobra Detectors

Twice.com has an interesting article about the 2006 Cobra and Whistler detectors [free registration required].

They point out that the new Cobra models will support the Ku band, but the Whistler's will not. Whistler's research apparently determined that the Ku band will not be used in the United States in the "near future".

New from Whistler are a couple of detectors with remote controls. They are also following Bel's lead by offering models with exchangeable colored trim.

From the article:

Whistler's new 2006 detectors include two with remote control modules and several models with exchangeable colored trim plates. The XTR-220 and XTR-520 come with a remote control that is useful in SUVs or minivans that have large windshields or dashboards where the detector may be hard to reach.

Whistler also has a model that will let you totally customize the detector's alerts. You can record your own audio message to play, and even customize the display text for each alert. I'm sure the enthusiasts could have some fun with that feature!

UPDATE 2/6/06 - The article is incorrect. Some Whistler XTR series models WILL support the Ku band.
