The Cobra XRS 9970G Radar Detector is Here!
The Cobra XRS 9970G is Cobra's latest entry into the windshield radar detector market. This is a top of the line offering from Cobra, with GPS functionality and their new touch screen display. Many of you are fans of the feature rich Cobra radar detectors, and the 9970G is a great addition to their extensive line.
Regular readers of this blog know that red light cameras continue to rip-off as many of you as possible. Having a good warning system is the best protection you can have in areas where crooked politicians have installed red light cameras. The 9970G offers a full GPS warning system and radar detector combined into one easy to use device.
We like the detachable GPS module a lot, and is one of our favorite features on the 9960G. So we were very pleased to see that Cobra is continuing to use the easy to remove module. You can just unplug the module and connect it to your PC for updates, instead of having to remove the entire detectors like other integrated radar / red light camera detector models.
The touch screen should make the 9970G even easier to use. Cobra has long had one of the best interfaces around. The large, full color touch screen is something that should enable you to quickly change the detector's settings.
We have the Cobra 9970G radar detector here in stock and ready to ship for $239.95 with free shipping!

The 2010 Whistler Radar Detector Roundup!
We have already talked a bit about the new RLC 250 from Whistler, but they also have several new radar detectors coming out this year. Whistler is the leader in budget, quality radar detectors and everyone here at Buy Radar Detectors is a big fan. Some of us use them in our personal vehicles, and we have literally a warehouse of radar detectors to pick from!
For 2010, there are a few new models and some that are an "upgraded" design over a previous model.
OK, here is a quick list of the new 2010 models:
- Whistler XTR-145 THE XTR-145 IS NOW IN STOCK! $42.95
- Whistler XTR-265
- Whistler XTR-335 THE XTR-335 IS NOW IN STOCK! $69.99
- Whistler XTR-420
- Whistler XTR-440
- Whistler XTR-555
- Whistler PRO-68SE
And also the new RLC-250 (currently getting my vote for Best Car Gadget of 2010).
One thing that we are interested in, we consider the Whistler PRO 68 to be one of the best (if not the best) radar detector available for under $100. The new Whistler PRO-68SE might be a very interesting model.
I will update this list as we get the models here at our radar detector test lab. Also, we of course will continue to stock all of the existing models including the popular Whistler XTR-690 SE, Whistler PRO 78SE, and Whistler XTR-540 Radar Detector.

The Whistler XTR695 SE Radar Detector is Here!
We now have them in stock. Yes, Whistler was being all stingy and not letting online retailers sell them. However, they changed their mind and now we have them here in stock and ready to ship out! The Whistler XTR-695 SE is one of the best radar detectors you can buy for the price. The XTR-695's performance is legendary, and Whistler has managed to further improve the design without losing the original's unique qualities.
Whistler has long been the leader in affordable, quality radar detectors and the XTR-695 SE is no exception. If you have been looking for a budget friendly radar detector with great performance then give the XTR 695 SE a look. We have them ready to go for $174.95! If you have any questions at all, give us a call or send an email.
And no, this is not a prank, we really do have them here at our radar detector headquarters. I had one on my desk even! Check back here on our radar detector blog later this week for another very interesting item we have from Whistler as well. One that I think many of you will like a lot.

Radar Detectors are Illegal in Virginia, and They Will Stay That Way for Now
The bill to repeal the ban on radar detectors failed to make it through the state's legislature. So for now the use of radar detectors in Virginia will continue to be illegal.

Escort has Changed the Solo S2 Radar Detector - Well Sorta
The Escort Solo S2 Cordless Radar Detector is a favorite around here. While cordless radar detectors do not have the same performance of a "wired" model, the Solo 2 is still a very good radar detector. Also, it is perfect for motorcycles, and for those that need a detector that can easily be set-up and used with different vehicles.

Escort has made some minor changes to the packaging of the Solo 2 model. On the left side of the picture is the old package, and on the right is the new one. The radar detector is staying the same, but it will now come with a soft case and an extra set of suction cups. The price is remaining the same at $339.95. Here at Buy Radar Detectors our opinion on soft cases is split. Many feel that it makes it easier to store, and is more rugged than the hard case. Others feel that the hard case provides better protection and is, well, nicer. We only have a few hard case models left, so if you want one, please call us at 1-800-584-1445 and specify that you want one.

Radar Detectors in Virginia?
In a follow-up to our last blog post, it looks like efforts to repeal the ban on radar detectors in Virginia are making some headway. According to this article the bill has now passed to Virginia's general assembly. Way to go! So should legalizing radar detectors in Washington DC be next?
January 28, 2010
Are Radar Detectors Going to be Legal in Virginia?
According to this article radar detectors may soon be legal in Virginia. Currently Virginia is the only state where having a radar detector is illegal, though they are also illegal in DC and on military bases. Virginia's ban has long been a frustration to drivers. You have to stop and take down your detector when entering the state, in fact there are even signs at the stateline warning you of this. For many people, a concealed radar detector was their only option. This is great news for everyone that drives in Virginia! We also encourage you to write to Delegate Joe May expressing your support for his plan to legalize radar detectors.

Cobra Touchscreen Radar Detectors
Cobra really knows how to make a great interface for their radar detectors. It looks like the soon to be released XRS 9970G and XRS 9965 radar detectors will improve on their distinctive design and UI even further. Both detectors will feature a touchscreen display. You will be able to tap on the display screen and scroll through options and set your preferences.

This is a very interesting development in radar detectors. Most windshield mount detectors can be a bit, er, fiddly when trying to do something as simple as hit the mute button. Trying to actually change settings without yanking down the detectors is nearly impossible most of the time, and a very bad idea to attempt while driving. Cobra might be changing all of that, and we will be doing a detailed test ourselves.
The 9970 will offer all of the features of current top of the line Cobra windshield mount detectors including a GPS based camera warning system (with plug-in GPS locator, itself a very nice feature, and a lifetime subscription to the redlight camera warning service), POP detection, and voice alerts. The 9965 is very similar to the 9970 but does not include the GPS locator/service (though it should be available as an option).
We cannot wait to try out the new interface! It should be a great feature that we feel is rather innovative. Anything that makes detectors even more intuitive to use, and more effective tools as well, is a welcome addition.

Redlight and Speed Camera Warning Systems Reviewed
Regular readers and customers know that here at Buy Radar Detectors, we like to help you find the radar detector, camera warning system, laser jammer, etc... that is best for your personal driving needs. We work with you to research all of the products available, and we even offer services to help. We also really like independent reviewers. They often offer a perspective and analysis that helps all of us stay better informed of the many devices available. In turn we are able to provide real world opinions on different devices, and help find what is best for you.
One of the independent review sites we like here at our radar detector lab is radartest.com. There are two new articles over there that many of you will find interesting. The first article is on redlight camera databases. It provides some interesting information on how the camera databases work, as well as a comparison of some of the most common ones in use.
In the second article, there is a product comparison test between some of the leading combination radar detector / camera warning systems. If you have been thinking about buying a GPS enabled radar detector you will want to give it a look.
I think all of this warrants a new contest! Send an email to us at contest @ buyradardetectors.com (remove the blank spaces) briefly telling us about the time you wished you had a camera warning system, were saved by one, or a review of one of the systems. Your entry might even end up here on our radar detector blog, and the five best are going to win a free t-shirt (make sure to include what size shirt and a shipping address in your email).
So go and read the articles about redlight camera systems, and let us know if you have any questions!

Remote Controlled Radar Detector from Whistler
Do you know someone that loves gadgets? Is there someone on your holiday shopping list that is looking for something unexpected? Well, they might like the Whistler XTR-220 Radar Detector. The XTR-220 is unusual in that it has a remote control. This is very helpful for people with vehicles that have large windshields or dashes, such as many SUVs.
The remote is small and easily fits on a keychain. What is better than a radar detector? A radar detector with a remote control!
The XTR-220 is also a good all-purpose budget friendly ($62.99) radar detector. It has an easy to read LED display, POP mode radar detection, 3 city modes, and selectable bands. For a limited time we are offering $5.00 shipping, we have them in stock, and they ship out the same day as long as you place an order before 6 p.m. EST.

UPDATED! Redline Radar Detector, Here Now!
That is correct! The Redline Radar detector from Escort is now here and ready to ship. The Escort Redline radar detector is a no-frills performance detector. It may have the longest detection range of any current device. Escort states that the Redline has the best detection range available of any radar detector.
The Redline has voice alerts, and a simple but clear display with brightness controls, and auto muting. One of the best features is that it uses the same magnesium case as the Bel STi Driver. This means it is completely shielded and undetectable by radar detector detectors.
If you have been waiting to get this impressive, all-out detector, or have started to do a bit of Christmas shopping, you may one to grab one of these now. It may be a short wait until the next shipment arrives from Escort. There have been a lot of calls and emails about this detector, and we cannot wait to hear what all of you think about it!

Shopping for a Radar Detector to Give as a Gift?
Do you have a friend or family member that has mentioned they would like a radar detector? Well, shopping for a detector can be a rather involved task. One thing you might want to do, is check out our radar detector buyers guide. But, I thought I would pass along the detectors that I personally suggest people will like.
If your budget is under $100, then the Whistler Pro 68 Radar Detector ($99.99) is the way to go. It is probably the best detector for the price.
An upgrade from the Pro 68 is the Whistler Pro 78 SE Radar Detector ($169.95). This is one of the best performing detectors for under $200, it is very popular, a great detector, and has some great features.
Next is the Bel Professional Series RX65 Radar Detector ($339.95). We have a very detailed review here on our radar detector blog that shows why this is one of the best detectors around for any price.
If you are looking for perhaps the best traditional style radar detector, then give the Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector ($499.95) a look. The ability to block out false alerts, and a redlight camera warning system, along with amazing range and performance makes the 9500ix one of the top detectors around.
These are just a few suggestions, please call or email us with any questions you have. Our staff is ready to help you find the right gift (even if it is just for yourself).

Radar Detector Review Contest Winners!
Everyone at Buy Radar Detectors would like to thank all of those that sent in an entry to our Review a Radar Detector and Win a T-shirt Contest!
All of the winners should be getting their t-shirts in the next two weeks. Ryan Reckard sent us the best review of the bunch, and we though all of you might enjoy it. This is the kind of testimonial that helps others who are shopping for a radar detector! We like it when we can tell customers what other people think about a product!
Review: I have owned many radar detectors, including a few Whistlers, Cobra, a Valentine1, and a few other brands. While many of these detectors do detect radar, I have found the Escort Passport 9500ix to be the best one for me. I started out with the cheap ones and eventually upgraded to the Valentine1, and now the 9500ix.What I love about the 9500ix is the autolearn and the fact it has GPS and great sensitivity. As there are red light cameras, speed cameras, and mobile speed cameras in my city, this detector has been a life saver. The police only use radar and pacing for speeding tickets here, so this detector is perfect. If the detector starts beeping, IT IS A POLICE. I have driven all around the city in the last 6-8 months I have owned this detector and when it chirps, it is always a police or speed trap because of the awesome anti-falsing GPS.
I can't ask for a better detector, the sensitivity is great and it automatically adjusts just about anything for you. The brightness, the volume, the sensitivity, the mute under 20mph, the automute, the autolearn, anti-falsing, and city-highway selection is all automatic (which can be disabled) -- is just incredible. This detector alerts of red light cameras, speed cameras, and the mobile speed cameras are found well in advance using the anti-falsing GPS radar detecting.
If you do a lot of city driving, travel the same highway frequently, or just like to drive, this detector is perfect. GPS adds tons of features to the detector and that is why I gave up the arrows from the Valentine1 because it was useless to me when it went off every 5 seconds. Arrows on the 9500ix would make it the absolute winner, but GPS makes up for the fact you don't have 2 sensors. Think of the GPS as the extra arrow, only better.
Remember to check back again for future contest and thanks again to everyone that sent in a review!

Beltronics RX65 and Escort 8500 X50 Comparison
We get to do a lot of cool thing here at Buy Radar Detectors. When we are not conducting comparison test, trying out new products, and running contest, we also get to do a lot of research. We try very hard to match up the best radar detector for the buyer. This involves more than just asking questions, we also pay attention to what people are buying, and also the range of products they are interested in.
Two radar detectors stand out in this regard. A lot of people out there are interested in the differences between the Beltronics RX65 and the Escort 8500 X50. So, we decided to do more than just a review of features, and a quick comparison. These are both great radar detectors, but are they as similar as they appear? Which one is better overall? Many of you know that Beltronics is owned by Escort, so are they all that different under the hood?
To find this out, we are going to open up the boxes, show you what you get with each one, give a rundown on their performance specs, and then how well they each perform in independent testing. Danny just now brought me both detectors still all wrapped in plastic. So what I find in the box, is what you as the consumer would find.
The Boxes
As you can see, they both come in boxes about the same size. Yes, I am even going to compare the boxes they come in! First up is the Escort 8500. The Escort Passport 8500 X50 has a lot of "awards" and review blurbs, and even a sticker on it telling us it is the "World's Best". It also has "Super Charged Performance" At the bottom, it informs us that it is a radar, laser detector.

Ok, turning round the box. Crap! That is a lot of stuff back there. I am going to just skip over the fact that it has "new extreme radar detection", some performance chart versus "Average Detectors" and the other absolute nonsense.
It does have some nice pictures of what the detector's screen looks like when I use, it can be muted, three display modes (radar is near / radar is complicated / radar is in this band and may be near), ultra-bright display so I can use it on a sunny day, and it comes with stuff.
Everything else on there is just out to overload the potential buyer with information. If it has all these patents, and detects all of these bands of radar, and a lot of cool features it has to be good! Just don't ask where the arrows are, really, that is not funny. Oh, and according to the back, yup. SUPER CHARGED PERFORMANCE!
A bit harsh, only about the packaging. I would hope that all of you by now know that a product should never be judged on the box it comes in. Just because the marketing department at Escort had too many skittles with lunch and got over enthused does not mean that there is not an well engineered detector in that super charged box.
Next is the Beltronics RX65 Professional Series. Ok, hold it right there. What is a "professional" radar detector. I doubt very much that most people that think about buying one of these drive for a living. They are not The Stig, and certainly not The Transporter. They may think they are The Bandit, or even, The Driver, perhaps at best ...Mad Max. There are a few Steve McQueens in this world, but radar detectors are low on their shopping list.
The only type of "pro" driver that may be interested is a Gumball participant, or street racers that race for cash. I suppose "Our customers may participate in potentially illegal racing activities, and need to be warned to the presence of local law enforcement." Just does not look as good on the box. Er, Professional Driver Series it is!
Ok, back to the purple box.
Well, it does look nice, and if you ignore the naming conventions nonsense, it is rather clean. There is a small quote that while exaggerative, is not too ridiculous. At the bottom is the fact that it is ULTIMATE, and a radar, laser, safety detector. Good to know what it is, just like the Escort I suppose. Ultimate does mean, there is nothing better, so it has to be the best right?
Now we look at the back. Ack! Turn it back around!

It claims to have the longest detection range of any detector, lightning fast response times, most advanced crap, etc... All things that can be tested, all things you are kinda screwing yourself by saying if you cannot back it up. Well at least there is a picture of what the display looks like.
Inside the Boxes
Once you get past the packaging, the fact that Beltronics is owned by Escort become rather obvious. They are packaged in a very similar manner. They both have a canvas storage case containing the detector, suction cups, and mount. Under the case is the user manual, and in a side section is the SmartPlug.

That is it. I think for the money a second set of spare suction cups would be nice. At least there are not several advertisements and flyers for hats or something.
The Canvas Cases
I like the canvas storage case they are using. Yes case. They are using the same one, except for a different logo.
I know some people like the hard cases, but the canvas one has just the right amount of flexible "give" while still protecting the detector. You can place it under a seat, or in a storage compartment without it crushing everything else. They also seem to hold up well, since they just use a simple zipper. Some cases have a lot of clips, and plastic hinges that just break even though the actual case will last forever.
This is one area where if you like the canvas case, you get something much nicer than what comes with "higher-end" detectors.
The Suction Cups and Clips
I think we are all waiting on something better than the suctions cups that come with all detectors. There are ways to get a bit more life out of old ones, but in time you have to replace them. For the money, I think both detectors should come with a spare set of replacement suction cups.
Then the clips. Identical clips are used for both detectors. They are also rather good, at least they are not plastic. If you use a bit of care inserting them and also when placing and removing the detector they might outlast the detector itself. You could always get a dash pad, but they are not the best solution for every vehicle. Many people get tired of removing the detector and that tends to be the main reason they go for a more "permanent" installation. Can't say I blame them. ( BTW send in pics of you installation and I will send a t-shirt to the coolest ones, just send them to: contest @ buyradardetectors.com.)
The SmartPlugs
All nice and coiled up in its own section of the box is a SmartPlug. Again, this item is identical for both detectors. If you are looking for one of the reason these detector cost a bit more than others, this is one of them.
The SmartPlug does not improve performance, it is not for a "stealthy" installation, or anything like that. It does however add a new level of convenience. In many cars you can plug the cord into a lighter/outlet on the dash. You can then very easily mute it without having to reach up to the actual detector. It also has an alert light on the plug.
This can be great if the detector is a bit too vocal from time to time, or you are driving at night and place the detector in dark mode (and use the plug light for speed warnings). "Why hi there Mr. Police Officer, no there is no detector in this car at all!" Sometimes it is just too annoying to have to fiddle with the buttons on the detector to mute or dim the display. The fact that the SmarPlugs come standard with the detectors, places them in a higher-end category over other budget detectors. This is a $29.99 option to buy a SmartPlug separately.
The Manuals
I have yet to encounter a radar detector manual that I think does a good job. The manuals that come with the RX65 and the 8500 are not absolutely terrible though, and do an adequate job of explaining the basics, and a bit on how to use the detector. They are also very similar. I would like to see manual a bit more thorough, but then again, I am one of the few people that will ever read one anyway. They come with a nice tear-out quick reference guide. You can check them out for yourself. We try to have a .pdf of all of the manuals we can find here on our site.
In fact, if you are comparing a couple of detectors, I would recommend that you give their manuals a quick look. You might find the one bit of information you need to help you decide the one that is best for you.
The Contents

Both radar detectors come with a nice durable case, and SmartPlug. The suction cups and mounts are as good as any, as are the manuals. So compared to a lot of other detectors, they do have some quality accessories standard in the box, and that is something they both should be proud of.

Compared to each other. Well, they each have nearly identical accessories. I would hope you purchased a detector based on performance, but if the connects of the box were meant to be a tie breaker, it is all the same. Now if one of them came with a Buy Radar Detectors.com t-shirt... just saying.
The Exteriors

Here we have them side by side. I wish they both had a little less "model graffiti" on them. Just the name and model number and a bit more discreet would be fine. The cases are nice non-descript grey plastic. While they are not the tank of radar detectors, that is the Beltronics STi Driver, they are sturdy and do not feel like they could pop apart if you dropped one. On the plus side, they also will not create a 1/2 mile deep crater in the ground if you drop one like the Bel STi either.
Radar detectors are going to get knocked around a good bit, and we seldom have any complaints from these. They are built to handle changes in temperature, constant motion, and being knocked in the floor from time to time. A lot of people do not realize what an achievement it is that detectors are as tough as they are considering the components jammed in there. There is more to a good radar detector than just an antenna, a speaker, and an on switch these days.

I feel that all radar detectors are a bit too large, but they are dealing with some very real limitations. You can only shrink the antenna so much. I would be surprised in fact if detectors get much smaller than they are now without a very big breakthrough in antenna design.
One thing that is important. Both detectors are just the right size to fit in the center storage console of most vehicles. I may like the storage case, but realistically I am not going to use it every time I take down the detector. Being able to slip it into a storage spot is very nice. Some of the detectors out there are a bit on the big size and can be hard to quickly "tuck away".
Size wise, the 8500 is slightly longer and has a tapered front so the readout is turned toward the driver. This can be a nice feature for some of you. Not so great is you live where the driver is on the right side of the car though.
The Buttons
Most of the buttons for both detectors are on the top. If you place the detector on the windshield they can be annoying to try to get to but there is not really much of an option here. The big center mute button on the RX65 is easy to use, but so is the little, almost hidden one on the front of the 8500. For some of you it may be a lot easier to use the front button than the big snooze bar on the RX65. Hopefully you can use the mute button on the SmartPlug anyway.
The city and brightness buttons on the RX65 are going to be a bit difficult to use. You will probably find it easier to take down the detector to change them. The power button is also up next to them, oops. The buttons on the 8500 are a bit easier, since they are the only buttons on the top and have some nice ergonomic little tabs.
Volume control is going to be a matter of preference. The RX65 has this snooze bar style button on top that you use to mute and change the volume. The 8500 has a wheel style control on the side. Being able to adjust the volume on a detector is often the single most used feature. For some of you, the RX65 may be easy to get to, for others the side control of the 8500 is best. I would think about where you plan to place the detector in your vehicle, then how easy it would be to use a top volume button or a side wheel when driving.
Also, if you place the detector on a dash pad, the RX65 is going to be a lot easier to use. The wheel will be too close to the mat surface and you will just be picking up the detector to adjust it after a while.
In the top center for both detectors is a release button for the windshield clip. We recommend you use this and not just yank down the detectors. It tends to wear out the release. Yes, some people just snatch them down. Then one day you are frustrated because the detector keep slipping off and falling down on the dash. Suction cups and clips are cheap to replace, but yanking it down messes up the actual case on the detector.
The Plugs
Both detectors are plugged in on the right side. The plug for the RX65 is on the front area, and the one on the 8500 is on the back area. Both use the same type of cord so this will again be a matter of personal preference. Sometimes the plugs toward the front are easier to connect and disconnect with one hand and are also easier to get to. If you are planning on hardwiring the detector or concealing the plug, then the 8500 might look much better.
The Laser Periscopes
The laser periscopes are used to redirect lasers from the rear of the detector towards the laser sensor. On the RX65 it is on the right side, and on the 8500 the left. You don't expect this not matter much do you? Good, because laser warning for the most part currently is not very good. According to where you place the detectors, and if there are any obstructions when facing the rear of your vehicle, the placement of the periscope might give you .000000001 seconds quicker warning if you get hit by a laser from behind.
The Performance
Well this covers what the RX65 and 8500 come with, and how they look. The important thing is how do they perform! For this we are going to reference testing done by the Guys Of Lidar. They are not afraid to run heads-up comparison in controlled situations. Do not trust anything you read that was created from the manufacturers. There is a lot of misleading, and convoluted data used. Give anyone enough time and they can create all kinds of graphs and charts using made up numbers.

Often the manufacturer will also use formulas based off of what the device should do based on the engineering specifications. When you are out shopping for a radar detector do not trust anything that you cannot verify. This includes the manufacturer, people that get paid for reviews, online stores (Even us!) There are several websites out there that conduct independent testing. They do not get paid to do it, they have no reason to try to promote any brand over another. While many radar detector dealers try to be as factual and honest as possible, you are your own best research team. If you visit an online retail site and they have lots of performance charts or 1-4 star ratings be a bit concerned as to how they are ranking their products.
This is one reason we do not do that here on Buy Radar Detectors. There are no nifty meters or 1-5 performance dots next to every detector on out site. People want to know "what is the best?" Truth is there is no "best" single detector for everyone. They all have different features that may be much more important to you than someone else. We prefer to work with you as an individual. This does not mean that we will not have a suggestion, or do not test the detectors ourselves. Trust me we do. So if you call and ask what is the difference between "X" and "Z" we will tell you what we have observed and also what others have found out in independent testing.
We are fortunate that GOL has just finished up a round of performance test. Included was a Beltronics RX65 and an Escort 8500 X50. So which detector had the best detection range for the different bands?
- K Band Test: RX65
- Ka Band (33.8): RX65
- Ka Band (34.7) RX65
- Ka Band (35.5) RX65
- Instant On (test one): Escort 8500 X50
- Instant On (test two - the hard one): RX65 - barely
I heavily recommend that you go and visit their site for more details on the test. The first thing you will notice is that both detector were very close in performance. The RX65 won in every category, but only by often small amounts. Again - go and look at the test for yourself!
If at this point I was completely indecisive about buying either detector I would have to favor the RX65. It was just slightly better than the Escort in everything except instant on detection. Another thing to note, both detectors are performing very well against models that cost $100-$200 more. From that perspective both are a great value. And if you figure in the quality of the items that are included with the detector, they are an even better deal.

Ok, so what is the difference between the two?
The Bel RX65 has the following features that the Escort 8500 X50 does not have:
- Over 60 Digital Voice Messages
- Ku Band Detection
If you like voice alerts, get the RX65. If you need Ku band detection, get the RX65. The Escort 8500 X50 is the least expensive of the two. For the money, it may be the best deal. For $30 more get the RX65 with a bit better detection range, and voice alerts. Everything else is almost equal.
The above reviews are for the 8500 and RX65 with red display screens. There is also an Escort 8500 X50 with a blue display ($349.95) and Beltronics RX65 with a blue display ($379.95) available. The only thing different from the detectors reviewed above is the display color.

Radar Detector Comparison Test - GOL 2009 Style
Once again the Guys of LIDAR (GOL) have just completed another great radar detector comparison test. Here at Buy Radar Detectors, we love these types of radar detector test. The more information we can get about detectors in real world situations (and not what the manufacturer tell everyone) in turn, helps us enable shoppers to be more informed. We want people to buy the best detector for them, not the one with the biggest advertising budget.
This is why we have a guide to shopping for a radar detector on our site, have this blog, and have features such as our radar detector comparison tool. We only carry products that we know work, use the items ourselves on a daily basis, openly ask for customer reviews, and even supply products for independent testing.
So thanks again to GOL, for a good job! If you are a member of a group of detector enthusiast, or just want to send in a review, please do. For a limited time you might even win a t-shirt!

Motorcycle Radar Detector Mounts
Have you ever been out riding and then noticed that someone had a radar detector mounted on their bike? You try to catch them to ask where they got it, but were too late. Well good news, we carry a lot of radar detector mounts for motorcycles. A lot. Just go to the page and start scrolling, and if we do not have one you need give us a call.
You can mount more than just a radar detector though. Some of the redlight camera warning systems will also work great. One of the guys here at Buy Radar Detectors even uses his to hold his cell phone. You can also use them to hold a navigation device or even a smart phone! Also, for all of you out there building a bike for a show, this may be another item to think about to help separate you from the competition.
You may also be interested in the cordless radar detectors we carry. Ride safe everyone!

Beltronics STi Driver Radar Detector Has Changed!

That is correct, the very popular Beltronics STi Driver radar detector now has new packaging and some changes to the accessories it came with. The most obvious difference is the size of the box, we have a new one here in the picture in front of the old one. It is a good bit smaller and a very easy way to tell the two apart.

The STi does not include the direct wire SmartPlug kit and the external speaker anymore. The storage case has also been changed, it is no longer a hard case but a canvas style one. Opinions are split on the new case. Some here like the canvas one, but the old hard case was unique (and tough) if a bit large.
The coiled smart cord, manual, windshield bracket, and spare suction cups are still included in the box. The price has also come down to $469.95. If you could care less about the direct wire smart plug kit and the external speaker this will save you $30. (available separately along with other Beltronics radar detector accessories)

We have a limited number of the original STi Drivers left, so if you want one grab it now before they are gone. Once we have sold them all we will have the new ones up on our site. If you want one of the newer ones right now (for the $469.95 price), contact us.
The radar detector itself is the same, and is still one of the best detectors around not to mention that it is undetectable. Most detectors have a "leaked signal" that can be picked by devices such as the VG2, Spectre, or Stalcar MK 3. In states where detectors are illegal to use, police are able to use these devices to identify vehicles with radar detectors. The Beltronics STi Driver uses a magnesium case and doesn't emit a signal.

Speaking of a Redline and Redlights
So, has anyone else thought about taking the upcoming Escort Redline radar detector and a Whistler RLC-100 redlight camera detector and using them together? Now you might need some kind of interface cable and adapter to help keep all the wires nice and tidy. But if someone was to use both, it might make a great radar detection and GPS based camera warning system. Now if someone was to just sell the RLC-100 for a great price, and perhaps even tweet about it on twitter, that would be something.

Escort Redline Radar Detector: Just Announced
The news is now out, and some details about the new Redline Radar detector from Escort have emerged. If you have been waiting for a radar detector that is just pure all-out performance, well you now have what you have been waiting for. Here's a quote from Escort:
Our team of engineers have created the most sensitive radar/laser detector period. RedLine provides the longest range for every signal out there.
The Redline uses digital signal processing to keep the number of false alerts down while still providing long range detection. This is not an Escort 9500ix, if you place it in Highway mode, you probably do not want to be in a dense urban area. The same can be said of many radar detectors however.
Summary: High sensitivity, long range capability, shielded, no frills for $499.95.
Escort states that the Redline is capable of detecting small amounts of laser light even if the source is off-axis. Most detectors have poor laser detection capabilities, so this would be a welcome improvement. The Redline is also using the magnesium casing that makes the Bel STi Driver radar detector so popular. Yup, the Redline is shielded to make it undetectable by radar detector detectors.

The Redline will have voice alerts, and a simple but clear display with brightness controls, auto muting, and all of the standard accessories. It looks like the travel case is a hard case and not a soft canvas bag even.
So how well will it work? The Redline is using a dual antenna design that is tuned specifically for each band. Escort says that this will provide very long range detection abilities, including against POP mode. We can not wait to see some real world test to see how it compares.
The Redline Radar Detector by Escort is going to offer the long range detection, high sensitivity usually only found in their high-end radar detector systems. This is not a radar detector for everyone, indeed it looks like it is intended to be a competitor to the Valentine One. Most people will never need the range/sensitivity, but do need more filtering options, false signal lockouts, and GPS based camera notifications.
Those that are looking for pure high performance should be a lot happier today with the introduction of what we think will be a very impressive radar detector. Contact us today to let us know what you think.
No word yet on availability. Be sure to check our blog for updates!

What is Setting Off Your Radar Detector!
Recently while driving down Interstate 485 my detector kept reporting activity every time I was near an overpass. A RADAR DRONE! Yup, some agencies place cheap radar emitters near the highway to set off an alarm. Not sure if I would call it a true false alarm. This has been going on for a while now, but it seems their use is increasing. I would even say that their use in construction zones is a good idea to help slow people down.
Ok, arguments about how truly useful these are aside, here are a few ways that detectors help to deal with drones and other false alerts.
If you have a radar detector with a multi threat display such as the Bel Professional Series RX65 or, Escort Passport 8500 X50 and you drive in an area with drones, you will be alerted if police are also nearby and trying to use the drones to hide their radar signal.
For those with radar detectors such as the Escort Passport 9500ix, they will mark and filter them out just like any other false signal after detecting them a few times.
Some of these drones use an uncommon frequency, such as X band, and can be safely manually filtered. Many radar detectors such as the Bel STi Driver radar detector also display the specific band frequency, and will help to differentiate between the band the drone uses and actual police radar.
So add drones to the list of things that will set off a detector (door openers, radar cruise control sensors, etc...)

The Best Radar Detector Under $100!
Sometimes you need a good budget radar detector. You have your eyes set on a certain hardcore radar detector, but for now you just want one for around $100. Well give the Whistler Pro 68 radar detector a look. It has a nice set of features for the money, including 3 City modes and filter modes for a reduction in false alerts, radar, laser, POP, and instant on detection, and a signal strength indicator. This may be the best radar detector around for under $100.

A Radar Detector for Everyone!
We get a lot of questions about what radar detector is the best deal around. Anyone that reads this blog knows that we like every Whistler radar detector model, but that does not mean they have the best budget radar detector for everyone.
If you are looking for a radar detector with very fast detection capabilities, or Ku band detection we have a detector you may like. The Bel Vector 995 Radar Detector has Ku band detection and is a very good radar detector for the price. It has fast detection speeds, good filtering, and has a great informational display.
Also, if you are looking for a radar detector that can also be easily used with other defensive gear for even more protection, you will want to give the Vector 995 a look. You can add some Laser Veil for better protection from laser, and even connect it to the Cincinnati Microwave ZR4 Laser Defense System (The two are made to work together!). Later, I would add the Cheetah GPS Mirror to have complete protection from radar, laser, and cameras. This is a surprisingly affordable upgrade path for those that want to build a good protective system over time.
We currently have a special on a Beltronics 995 and Veil combo to help get you started. For $314.94 you will have a great Beltronics radar detector, and Laser Veil. Call us if you have any radar detector questions.

Where is that Radar Detector You Just Bought Coming From?
Those of you who have placed an order know that often we will tell you that it will ship out the same day. How can we know that? Many other online stores will just sell what they have too many of in some warehouse on the other side of the country. We don't do that here. Our warehouse is connected to our offices here in Rock Hill, SC. This means we can easily check to see what we have, make sure we only stock the newest versions, and know when new items arrive.
When I have questions on an item, I can get up, and walk over to our warehouse. I can go and pick it up, even see how many we have in stock. If there is a special request I can tell our folks in the warehouse in person. This level of communication means we can ship out your purchase very fast, keep our cost low, and not have to send multiple email and phone messages to some warehouse in another time zone.
A lot of companies out there have an "office" of sales people who read scripted messages and have to look up every question in a help desk database. Then your order is sent to another location for payment and to another for processing. Finally your order is packaged and sent out from a warehouse used by multiple businesses. Yup, the same people sending out your radar detector also just sent out a new toaster and some patio furniture as well! They are not even in the same city as the sales people, they have never even spoken with them.
Other businesses will just drop-ship an item. That is a fancy way of saying they have it sent by another company to you. You end up paying not one place, but two. Do not even get me started on people selling refurbished radar detectors as new. If they are not an authorized dealer beware, you will have no warranty, and who knows what you will get.
By keeping all of our items at one location, it enables us to have a lot more control over how we send you your purchase. We do not ship from a random warehouse having never even seen what the item looks like. We can keep our prices low, inventory current, and can provide the customer service all of you look for.

Customer Review: Whistler XTR-695
We just got a radar detector review from a customer and Danny wanted me to share it with all of you. Here at Buy Radar Detectors, we actually like to know what our customers think about all of the radar detector and protection products available. In our effort to help people find the best solution to their needs, we like to learn about everything we can. So if you have a review and would like to send it our way, please do! I can not promise it will show up here on our radar detector blog, but you never know!
So thanks to Nhan V. Nguyen of Santa Rosa, California, a Traffic Radar/Laser Countermeasures Enthusiast, for a great review of the Whistler XTR-695. I hope the rest of you like it as much as we did!
Our most appreciations: Accurate reading laser LSID with laser pps false alert lock-out feature. Accurate reading Ka RSID. LCD display with different colors assigned for different alerts and background colors. User friendly and most easy setup within seconds. Ka detection range is far superior than most RDs available on the market within the same price range. Laser detection is much better than most RDs within the same price range.
Our most frustrations: LCD display works well when driving in early evening without direct sunlight or throughout the night otherwise it's unreadable during the daytime with direct sunlight regardless mounting positions on windshield. Excessive Ka false alerts in grossly RF polluted areas. Slot holding bracket does not fit tight causing the unit bounced off and makes it harder to read the display even at night.
What we hope for: Tighter slot holding bracket like the Pro78SE. A new recessed LCD display window with much better contras and brightness. Better Ka guard filter to minimize Ka false alerts in grossly RF polluted areas.
Our suggestions to XTR-695 owners:
1. Turn Off POP reception and select filter mode to reduce Ka false alerts when you're in a highly RF polluted area.
2. Turn Off X, K and Safety radar if you know for sure your local LEOs only use Ka band radar guns. Somehow by doing this, it'd also help to reduce Ka false alerts based on our own experience.
3. XTR-695 will provide much better laser detection if it's low mounted on the windshield or if it is possible, dash mount it on driver side with unobstructed view so you can see its LCD display easier.
4. The use of Veil G-4 for headlights, fog lights, chrome plated grills, license plate or plate cover (if it is illegal to use plate cover in your home state, the use On Track Laser Shield is highly recommended) in combination of XTR-695 is a must. This option is the most affordable traffic laser countermeasures if you can't afford active laser jammer such as blinder extreme or the likes...!
Results from our own testing for XTR-695:
Excellent KaRSID alert on Ka radar guns with 33.8GHz, 34.3GHz and 34.7GHz and almost as good as our reference V1.
Excellent laserLSID alert within a distance approx. 2,500ft with accurate pps reading displayed if the unit is low mounted on the windshield or dash mounted.
A few of our random radar and laser encounters:
Incident #1: Driving through interstate 5 between San Joaquin county and Kern county both north bound and south bound, this area is known as "intense 34.7GHz Ka enforcement", XTR-695 alerted KaRSID 34.7GHz with distance approx. 1.5mile ahead.
Incident #2: Laser speedtrap on north bound Hwy101 between Marin county and Sonoma county, this area is also know to most local commuters as "deadly random laser ambush". XTR-695 alerted LaserLSID100pps from distance approx. 2,000ft or less for the 1st strike and the 2nd strike at approx. 1,700ft. At that point, we knew that lidar operator did not get our speed reading from the 1st strike and thanks to Veil G-4, On Track Laser Shield, we survived that laser ambush.
Incident #3: XTR-695 alerted KaRSID 34.3GHz constant-on from at least 1 mile behind our car. Finally motorcycle CHP officer passed us. We decided to follow him with a distance approx. 1 1/2mile, the alert continued on and finally stopped as the CHP officer disappeared on the freeway and the estimated distance was somewhere about 2.5miles.
Well, what else can anyone could ask for from a $189 radar/laser detector?

Veil Guy Reviews the Beltronics STi-R Concealed Radar Detector
Over on his blog, the Veil Guy has a new, and very thorough, review of the Beltronics STi-R Concealed Radar Detector. This is one of the top of the line detectors available, and you will have a hard time finding any reviews of at all, let alone one with the Veil Guy's signature real world testing style. Add to this the unbiased and very honest approach he takes in every review and you will not find a better, more objective look at one of the best high-end radar and laser detectors available.
He is not going to give you some marketing fluff. Instead he installed and documented how it performed, and not over some weekend. He used it for quite a while in everyday driving in addition to just "testing" it. With years of experience and a tremendous amount of knowledge, you will not find many better reviews of radar and laser detectors out there.
While you are there, go and check out the rest of his blog. It is always insightful and a tremendous resource for the first time shopper, radar detector enthusiast, and informed drivers. So go and check it out now!

Radar Detector Brackets and Power Cords
Do you find yourself needing a new windshield bracket for you radar detector? If your suction cups are the problem, first check out our tips on freshening your windshield bracket suction cups. Ok, still need an entirely new bracket, well here are our windshield brackets for Beltronic, Cobra, Escort, and Whistler radar detectors.
Do you also need a power cord? Well here is our list of radar detector power cords and hard wire kits. Beltronics, Escort, and Whistler all have "enhanced" power cords as well as the standard ones. The enhanced cords typical provide an alert light and/or a mute button right on the plug, which is quite convenient if you have a steep windshield that makes your detector a tough reach. Beltronics and Escort have enhanced direct wire kits as well.
You might also want to look at our cigarette lighter adapters and splitters!

Still Waiting on Whistler Pro 78 SE and XTR-690 SE Radar Detectors (Updated)
Well, we are still waiting on the Whistler Pro 78 SE and XTR-690 SE Radar Detectors. We have told everyone in our Receiving department they cannot leave until the shipment from Whistler arrives. I have gone around to every truck in North America and placed tracking devices. A satellite may or may not have been placed on surveillance alert. We even called Whistler.
Sorry all but we will let you know when the Pro 78 SE and XTR-690 SE are in. It looks like that May 8th date is going to slip to next week. This blog and the site will be updated when we get some solid information. We are waiting for them to arrive, just like many of you, and are just as frustrated, but these things happen. For all those that pre-order, we are going to include a free Two Port Cigarette Lighter Adapter with USB Port as thanks for your continued patience. As we all sit here waiting on Whistler, just think about our people in the warehouse, they get a bit testy when not allowed to leave.
Quick update (5/19)! The radar detectors have just arrived and we are now shipping them out!

The Veil Guy Reviews the Whistler Pro 78 SE and XTR-690 SE Radar Detectors!
Once again the Veil Guy has managed to get some Whistler radar detectors for review way before everyone else. He has friends everywhere I tell you! As always he gives a thorough real world review of the Whistler Pro 78 SE and XTR-690 SE, and not some useless 1-10 score based on anecdotal information off of the packaging or a press release. So if you want to see these devices being used and how they compare, go check out Veil Guy's review now!
We are still hoping to have the Whistler Pro 78 SE and XTR-690 SE Radar Detectors in this week, er today or tomorrow. If not, we will try to let everyone know.
I volunteered to go get them personally, but was told by Whistler that they are getting ready to ship them. I had a cool 18 wheeler, basset hound named Fred, and a black Trans Am all picked out, we even had a theme song to use. Well that will have to wait until next time.

A Cordless Radar Detector and You
Have you ever gone to drive a friend or family member's vehicle and realized that they have no radar detector. While you could go and get the one you have, what if it is specially mounted, or a concealed install!
You could go and buy all of them radar detectors, but there is a more simple solution. Why not get a second cordless detector. They are easy to store, and transport, and they have no dangling power cords to deal with. Just make sure it is charged up and you are ready to go, you will never have to drive without a detector again.
Here are all of the cordless detectors we currently carry:
Escort Solo S2 Cordless Radar Detector
Whistler DE-1788 Cordless Radar Detector
Whistler XTR-185 Cordless Radar Detector
Whistler XTR-190 Cordless Radar Detector
Cordless radar detectors are very popular to use with motorcycles as well. One thing to remember though, because of reduced power consumption, performance is usually not as good as with powered models.

2009 Cobra Radar Detector Comparison
We now have several new Cobra radar detector models now in stock, and thought we should give all of a you a short review of the new options and changes.
One of the more interesting additions is that the AURA red light camera database functionality has been added to several models. While you will need to buy the GPSL plug-in and then subscribe to the service, this is a great option for those that may not need the red light alerts now but may want to upgrade in the future.
Cobra also claims that the new detectors provide detection of the Spectre I-IV radar detector detectors (RDDs). We look forward to some independent testing to learn more about this. Also the 9645, 9745, 9845, 9945, 9955, and 9960G have been upgraded to have what is described as "ultra" performance. So all of you radar detector testers (Hi all! Hope you are all doing well.) get to it.
Ok, here are the main changes for each of the detectors:

Radar Detector Tips: Keeping Suction Cups Fresh
Hi there, today I thought we would talk about something other than red light cameras. Crazy talk I know, but there are a lot of tips and tricks out there for radar detectors. Now some of these are, well, more subjective than others, but a few of these are just smart, simple, and useful.
Out first tip, or trick is one for those of you using windshield brackets. Have you noticed that after a while the suction cups used to hold the bracket to the windshield seem warped, all worn out, and may even not hold as well anymore. Well, try placing them for a short bit in some boiling water. That should have them return to their original springy state. At least they will be clean.
Now if they are still not as good as new, try this. Place a very small amount of either liquid dish soap or Vaseline on the suction cup (very, very, small amount). This will help them adhere better to the windshield and will not leave much of a mess later to clean up. Do not use anything else though, trust me, you may want to remove the radar detector someday.
If the two tricks above do not work we also sell replacement mounting brackets along with a large selection of accessories. Try boiling them first though, you may be surprised.

I Need a New Radar Detector! Wait, No I Need a Red Light and Speed Camera Detector. Oh, You can Have Both!
Ok, after the last Veil Guy post, we started talking about how there are a lot of interesting red light and speed camera related products out now in the world of radar detectors. So we decided to create a list of the most popular products that function as both a radar detector and camera detector.
Even though some communities have been able to have red light and speed cameras removed, their use is still growing. Combine that with the fact that some cities are purposely shortening the length of yellow lights to generate revenue. (I had to retype that last part. Making a light shorter just to write more tickets is rude and annoys me. My first comment was more vehement .)
So here you go, our list of radar detectors that can also be used to warn you of Yellow Light Cash Generators. (See what I did there.) Oh, we would like to point out, this list is far from comprehensive. We also have some detectors with opional red light and speed camera components you can get separately. These however have everything you need in one box:
Bel Professional Series GX65 Radar Detector (Red Display) Preloaded database of camera locations that can be updated from their website or manually updated.
Cobra XRS R9960G Radar Detector Preloaded database of camera locations that can be updated from their website or manually updated.
Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector (Blue Display) Preloaded database of camera locations that can be updated from their website or manually updated.
Escort Passport 9500i Radar Detector (Blue Display) Note: You must manually enter the camera location.
Escort Passport 9500i Radar Detector (Red Display) Note: You must manually enter the camera location.

Radar Detector Firmware Versions
Today's high performance radar detectors are like computers in a way: they work well because of a combination of both hardware and software. A radar detector's hardware are the physical parts of the detector that enable it to sniff out a radar signal. This is the part that chiefly determines the sensitivity of a detector. Software, or firmware, controls how a detector behaves once it encounters a signal, and is responsible for the "personality" of the product. It decides which signals to filter out as false alerts, and is responsible for many of the detector's features, including the user interface.
Radar detector hardware doesn't change very often, if ever. Typically a change would only occur as new models come to market. Firmware, however, is frequently being tweaked by radar detector manufacturers and it is common to see several new versions released per year. That means that, for example, a Bel RX65 purchased today would potentially perform differently than a RX65 purchased several months ago, and certainly would perform differently than one purchased several years ago.
What Are They Changing?
So, what kinds of changes are being made with these firmware upgrades? Manufacturers are typically secretive about specific changes, but a common tweak is likely to adjust a detector's filtering capabilities for newly found interference-creating devices. Updates could also contain bug fixes, or product enhancements. Within the last year, Beltronics released an updated version of the STi Driver that fixed a problem related to poor sensitivity on a specific Ka frequency. Also within the last year, Whistler released an updated Pro 78 and XTR690 that improved Ka performance and enhanced some user interface functions.
Shopping For The Latest Firmware
If you're shopping around for a new radar detector, be aware that the detector's firmware version could affect its performance and usability. Avoid buying products from retailers or web sites where product would sit on shelves for months (from infrequent sales or due to huge quantity buys), or from web sites who have distributors "drop ship" product instead of stocking themselves. In a situation where products have sat in a warehouse for months or where a dealer has no control of the source of the products, it is easy to see how you could receive a dated version.
Buy Radar Detectors policy for high end detectors is to only stock as many units as we expect to sell within a two week period. This means we are constantly turning over our inventory, and always have a recent firmware version. We are now beginning to indicate on our product pages exactly which version we are currently shipping. We are also indicating manufacture date, when available. This information is being checked and updated once per month. If you are considering purchasing from us and have any questions regarding the firmware, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Checking Your Radar Detector's Firmware Version
If you already have a high performance radar detector and are curious to find out your firmware version, simply find your detector below and follow the steps.
Beltronics STi Driver - Hold down both the Volume/Mute and Sensitivity buttons while powering on the detector. The firmware version will be displayed when the detector turns on. Warning: this will reset the detector's settings to factory defaults.
Beltronics RX65, Vector Series (995, 965, 955, 940) - Hold down both the City and Brightness buttons while powering on the detector. The firmware version will be displayed when the detector turns on. Warning: this will reset the detector's settings to factory defaults.
Escort 8500 X50 - Hold down the City, Dim, and Mute buttons while powering on the detector. The firmware version will be displayed when the detector turns on. Warning: this will reset the detector's settings to factory defaults.
Whistler Pro 78, XTR-690 - Hold down the City button while plugging the detector into the cigarette lighter adapter. The firmware version will be displayed when the detector turns on.
Valentine One - Hold in the control knob while turning the knob "on". Continue to hold in the knob until all lights are illuminated (about 5 seconds). Release the control knob, then press-and-release it again. This will display the version one digit at a time in the bogey counter window. Warning: this takes you into the V1's programming mode. To exit, turn the detector off and then back on normally.
Dates of Manufacturer
For Bel and Escort products, you can determine the date of manufacture by checking the label on the bottom of the detector. The last four digits on the serial number line represent a year and week number. For example, if this number on the bottom of your detector is 1208 that means the detector was manufactured during the 12th week of 2008.

Whistler's 2008 Radar Detector Lineup
Buy Radar Detectors is pleased to announce the 2008 lineup of Whistler radar detectors. Whistler's 2007 introduction of the XTR-690 and Pro 78 radar detectors has been a huge success, so we've been anxious to see what they had in store for us this year. We're sure you won't be disappointed!
There are five new models, all of which are expected to become available in May. Pricing information is not yet available for models other than the XTR-695.
Whistler XTR-695
The Whistler XTR-695 will retail for $189, and will almost certainly replace the Pro 78 as the most popular detector in the series. It uses the same platform as the Pro 78 and XTR-690 so there will be little difference in range or false alert filtering, however there several are new features and as well as aesthetic improvements over the XTR-690. The most noticeable addition is the ability to change the background color of the display. Users can select from 7 available colors, but more importantly a background color can be linked to a specific type of alert. As an example, X band alerts could have a green background color, K band could be blue, with Ka red. This could help quickly alert you to the seriousness of a threat.
The XTR695 also introduces a Ka radar and laser "Signature ID" feature, which will be a big hit with enthusiasts. This feature gives a driver additional information to help determine if a threat is real or false.
As you become accustomed to driving in a certain area with a detector, you tend to learn where false alerts will occur and what band(s) of radar police in your area typically use. Normal radar band identification (X, K, Ka) is very useful, as it helps a driver determine if the alert is a real threat or a false alarm. The X and K radar bands are relatively small, and there is little fluctuation in the frequencies that a detector will pick up in these bands. Ka, however, is a monster. There are three common frequencies used by Ka radar guns in the United States, but there are also three other less common Ka frequencies that are used and cannot be ignored by a detector. When the Whistler XTR-695 receives a Ka alert, the Signature ID feature allows the detector to display the frequency of the Ka radar gun closest to the detected frequency. This effectively breaks the Ka band down into smaller segments, which can be much more useful when determining the validity of a threat.
The laser Signature ID feature works a little differently. During a laser alert, the XTR-695 will display the pulse rate (PPS) of the laser being detected. The Whistler XTR-695 even allows drivers to lock out individual PPS rates, preventing future alerts for that PPS. This feature is the answer to the prayers of many drivers who suffer through daily laser falses because their route takes them by an airport or other laser source.
An audio jack has also been added. This is a nice benefit for motorcycle owners, or those looking to attach an external speaker. It also creates the ability for a 3rd party, like Cheetah, to develop interfaces to the 695. We may now see an interface that allows the GPS Mirror to communicate with the XTR-695!
This model also has all other features you would expect from a flagship Whistler model: voice alerts, selectable bands, compass, 3 city modes, twin periscope LEDs, a volt meter, an industry best 3 year warranty and more.
We will begin accepting pre-orders for the XTR-695 very soon!
Whistler Pro 68
The new Whistler Pro 68 will replace the Pro 58, which will be discontinued. The Pro 68 will have the same blue icon display of the 58, but will add twin periscope LEDs. Range will be similar to the Pro 58, but additional filter modes have been added. A two year manufacturer warranty is included. No pricing information is available at this time for the Pro 68.
Whistler XTR-575
The Whistler XTR-575 radar detector will include a 72 point digital compass and blue back-lit text display. The XTR-575 uses Whistler's mid-range platform, so performance will be similar to that of the Pro 68. Although no pricing information is available at this time, it is likely the XTR-575 will be the lowest priced model with this platform. The XTR575 also offers selectable bands, twin periscope LEDs, and a 1 year warranty.
Whistler XTR-550
The Whistler XTR-550 replaces the XTR-500, which will be discontinued. It has the same bright red text display of the XTR-500 and also offers voice alerts. The XTR550 uses Whistler's smaller platform, so performance will be similar to the XTR-330 and XTR-260. Twin periscope LEDs and a 1 year warranty are included.
Whistler XTR-130
The Whistler XTR-130 will be the new low end model in the series, joining the XTR-140. The XTR130's features will be similar to the 140, but with only one city mode and no periscope LEDs.
An update will be posted here once these new models are in stock. Check back soon for pre-order information on the XTR-695!
UPDATE (4/10/2008) - The detectors listed above are only the new models that will be released soon. Many current models will still be available. The following is the full lineup of available models: XTR-130, XTR-140, XTR-185, XTR-190, XTR-260, XTR-330, XTR-550, XTR-560, XTR-575, XTR-690, XTR-695, 1788, Pro 68, Pro 78, Pro 3450, Fuzion

Where Should You Mount Your Radar Detector?
Customers are frequently asking us for advice on the best mounting location for a radar detector. Unfortunately, there is not an easy answer. Choices usually come down to either mounting the detector high on the windshield or visor or low on the windshield or dashboard, and there are advantages and disadvantages to both.
High Mounting
Positioning a radar detector high on a windshield, such as by the rear-view mirror or clipped to a visor gives you better protection against police radar. A detector that is mounted high will catch some radar signals sooner than with a lower mounting. This is particularly true in more hilly terrain, or when your vehicle is travelling up a hill and a police officer is targeting traffic from the other side. A high mounted detector will encounter the radar signal sooner, providing you with more time to adjust your speed.
With a high mounting, however, you risk missing a laser alert. At 1000 feet, the light from a police laser gun is only around 2 feet wide, and this light has to hit your radar detector before you will get an alert. Since the officer is aiming the laser at a front license plate or a headlight, there is a good chance that a high mounted detector this narrow beam.
Low Mounting
A radar detector mounted low on the windshield or attached directly to the dash (with Velcro or a dash pad) will provide the best all-around solution. You will lose a little in radar range, but will gain a lot in the ability to detect laser. Of course, a radar detector alone is not enough to guarantee protection against police laser, so if laser is used in your area be sure that you have a passive solution like Laser Veil or a laser jammer.
Our Recommendation
We recommend you mount high if laser is not used in your area, or if you have an active laser jammer installed.
We recommend you mount low if laser is used in your area and you are using only a passive laser defense product (or no specific laser defense product).

Ku Band Is NOT Coming To The USA
Almost two years ago, a rumor started floating around that a radar gun manufacturer may be producing a radar gun that operates using the Ku radar band. There are already speed measurement devices that use the Ku band, but they are rare and are used predominately in a few European countries. Cobra and Whistler reacted to this rumor by adding Ku band detection to their 2006 detectors.
In a new article, Craig Peterson of RadarTest.com puts this rumor to rest and does some digging into how it got started. Click here to read the article.

Illumine Radar Detector
Techeblog is reporting a new radar detector called the Illumine. The Illumine is designed for female drivers. It has a unique look, similar to a perfume bottle. The Illumine does not "beep" or make any other sound. Instead, it glows when a radar is detected. The stronger the signal, the brighter the glow.
While an interesting concept, this product seemingly has some large flaws. Perhaps we can overlook the absence of a true display. Personally, I like to know what radar band is being detected because it helps me screen out false alerts, but this product is obviously not intended for customers who want to get the most from their detector. I don't believe I can overlook the lack of audio alerts, however. The purpose of this device is to give you time to slow down when a police officer is near, and I don't see how the "glow" will catch your attention fast enough. It may grab your attention at night, but will it be enough on a bright day?
An unconventionally shaped detector may not be a bad idea in areas where radar detectors are illegal. If you are searched and the officer is specifically looking for a detector, they would likely not suspect something shaped like the Illumine.
It appears that the Illumine is a prototype and is not yet near production, but unless the apparent flaws are addressed I would recommend you stay away from it.

How To Use Your Radar Detector
A radar detector is a great tool, but it could hurt you more than help if you don't know how to use it properly. This post will attempt to explain how you can get the most benefit from your radar detector. It will teach you what you can expect from your radar detector, and what you cannot.
What Radar Detectors Do
Many people buy a radar detector and simply assume that they now have a license to speed. A few tickets later, these same people will discard the detector as "worthless". It is important to know what a radar detector is, and in what situations you can trust it, and when you must be cautious.
A radar detector will alert you when it senses certain frequencies of signals. The frequencies that they look for are frequencies that are commonly used by radar guns (the devices used by police to capture the speed of vehicles). These products do not detect police officers or police cars. They only detect the signals that are emitted by devices that police officers sometimes use.
When To Trust Your Radar Detector
The perfect situation for a radar detector is when you are driving in traffic, with other cars in front of and behind you. Fortunately, this is a very common scenario and is almost always the case when you are driving on an interstate or a highway during daylight hours. In this scenario, a police officer who is looking for speeders would set off your radar detector when his radar gun captured the speed of a driver in front of or behind you. This would usually give you plenty of time to slow down.
When To Be More Cautious
If you are driving in an area where there isn't much traffic, or if you are the only vehicle within sight, you should exercise more caution. In this scenario, a radar detector is not as valuable. A police officer using an instant-on radar gun could get your speed and your radar detector would have little time to warn you. When exceeding the speed limit in lite traffic, you should always keep an eye out for law enforcement officers and slow down around curves or hills. You also shouldn't speed excessively -- when you spot a police officer you will need to get your speed in check quickly.
The Laser Threat
While police radar is by far the biggest threat, laser usage by police is growing rapidly. Laser works differently than police radar, and laser detection is a weak point for radar detectors. Police laser is not used in all areas, so it is important that you find out if laser is used where you commonly drive. If laser is a threat in your area, you should arm yourself with a laser defense product, such as a laser jammer or Laser Veil, in addition to your radar detector.
Be Smart!
If you are expecting to plug in your radar detector and automatically be immune to tickets, then you are in for trouble. However, if you take the time to learn what you radar detector is actually doing, and combine that with smart, situational driving, you will be successful at avoiding speeding tickets.

Passive Radar Jammers Don't Work!
There are lots of products out there that claim to be passive radar 'jammers' or 'scramblers'. Most of these products are manufactured under the brand Rocky Mountain Radar, or RMR. Many of these products sell for $200 and up, and claim to jam both police radar and laser guns.
Tests have shown over and over again that these products are not capable of jamming anything. They are usually capable of detecting radar, but have the range of a $50 detector. I consider these products to be fraudulent and a scam. This company is intentionally deceiving customers. Because of this, we have never sold these products and we never will.
Don't just take my word for this. Check out these other stories:
RadarTest.com compares the RMR lineup to a top Escort detector. Can you guess the results?
In a different test, RadarTest.com finds that an empty box jams laser as well as the RMR-C450. How well does the box jam laser? Not at all.
CopRadar.com reports that passive jammers have zero effect on radar.
WREG-TV finds a lawyer who wants to start a class action suit against RMR. This story also finds the RMR scrambler works as well as a block of wood.
A police officer decides to test out a RMR Phazer 2 in this Local 6 story. The result? "No matter my speed, distance, type of speed gun -- radar or laser -- they got me every time."
There are many other stories just like these, but I hope this is enough to get my point across. Don't waste your money on a passive radar jammer! You would be much better off investing in a high quality radar detector, such as the Bel RX65 or the Escort 8500 X50. If you get one of these products and learn how to use it, you will be successful at avoiding speeding tickets.

What To Look For In A Radar Detector
We get quite a few compliments on the radar detector features page from our site, but to be honest, I've never really liked that page. Sure, it gives a definition of almost every feature imaginable, but that alone just isn't very helpful. I think it would be more helpful to separate the important features from the non-important ones and to provide a real world explanation for why a feature is crucial, or just a nice-to-have.
In this post, I'll try to do just that. I'll talk about what you should look for when spending money on a radar detector. I'll explain some of the more popular features that today's detectors offer, and I'll give you a few things to watch out for when choosing a detector.
