The Cobra XRS 9970G Radar Detector is Here!

The Cobra XRS 9970G is Cobra's latest entry into the windshield radar detector market. This is a top of the line offering from Cobra, with GPS functionality and their new touch screen display. Many of you are fans of the feature rich Cobra radar detectors, and the 9970G is a great addition to their extensive line.

Regular readers of this blog know that red light cameras continue to rip-off as many of you as possible. Having a good warning system is the best protection you can have in areas where crooked politicians have installed red light cameras. The 9970G offers a full GPS warning system and radar detector combined into one easy to use device.

We like the detachable GPS module a lot, and is one of our favorite features on the 9960G. So we were very pleased to see that Cobra is continuing to use the easy to remove module. You can just unplug the module and connect it to your PC for updates, instead of having to remove the entire detectors like other integrated radar / red light camera detector models.

The touch screen should make the 9970G even easier to use. Cobra has long had one of the best interfaces around. The large, full color touch screen is something that should enable you to quickly change the detector's settings.

We have the Cobra 9970G radar detector here in stock and ready to ship for $239.95 with free shipping!

Another Buy Radar Detectors Contest!

It is time for another of our popular contest here at Buy Radar Detectors. We often have a lot of demonstration items or trial products, and instead of taking them home with us, I am going to give a few away. They are not brand new, but pre-owned is a bit of a stretch.

This contest is easy, be one of the first three to send us an email to: contest @ buyradardetectors.com (no spaces) and let us know where to mail the items to. We have a TollFree Protector for the first to respond, and a Black License Plate Frame for the second and third entry.

The 2010 Whistler Radar Detector Roundup!

We have already talked a bit about the new RLC 250 from Whistler, but they also have several new radar detectors coming out this year. Whistler is the leader in budget, quality radar detectors and everyone here at Buy Radar Detectors is a big fan. Some of us use them in our personal vehicles, and we have literally a warehouse of radar detectors to pick from!

For 2010, there are a few new models and some that are an "upgraded" design over a previous model.

OK, here is a quick list of the new 2010 models:

And also the new RLC-250 (currently getting my vote for Best Car Gadget of 2010).

One thing that we are interested in, we consider the Whistler PRO 68 to be one of the best (if not the best) radar detector available for under $100. The new Whistler PRO-68SE might be a very interesting model.

I will update this list as we get the models here at our radar detector test lab. Also, we of course will continue to stock all of the existing models including the popular Whistler XTR-690 SE, Whistler PRO 78SE, and Whistler XTR-540 Radar Detector.

February 25, 2010

The Whistler RLC 250

Whistler's new RLC 250 is their new entry into the line of red light and speed camera warning systems. Many RLC systems use a small monochrome display, the RLC-250 instead has a 1.6", easy to read, multi-color display. Like other RLC systems, the RLC-250 compares your current GPS location with an on-board database of red light and speed camera locations and alerts you when you are near one.

Whistler RLC 250

It is also a lot smaller than you might think. In the picture is a Whistler XTR 695 SE (I told you we had them in stock!), a Whistler RLC 100, and in the front is the Whistler RLC 250. It is much more compact than most radar detectors. Also, one thing many people overlook is that since you only need to have a clear GPS signal, it can be mounted just about anywhere on the dash. Yes, that means even on top of the driver's side console. Just make sure it has an unobstructed path for a clear GPS signal.

One thing we do not like, it seems to be lacking the ability to plug a radar detector into it like you are able to do with the RLC 100. We really would have liked to have had that ability. I am sure many of you are like we are and have way too many gadgets already plugged in as it is. Well at least we have some cigarette lighter adapter / splitters available.

If you have been looking for a compact RLC with a nice display, then give the RLC 250 a look. We have them here for $114.95. They are much cheaper than a ticket for not coming to a complete stop before turning right on a red light. Crooked politicians.

The Whistler XTR695 SE Radar Detector is Here!

We now have them in stock. Yes, Whistler was being all stingy and not letting online retailers sell them. However, they changed their mind and now we have them here in stock and ready to ship out! The Whistler XTR-695 SE is one of the best radar detectors you can buy for the price. The XTR-695's performance is legendary, and Whistler has managed to further improve the design without losing the original's unique qualities.

Whistler has long been the leader in affordable, quality radar detectors and the XTR-695 SE is no exception. If you have been looking for a budget friendly radar detector with great performance then give the XTR 695 SE a look. We have them ready to go for $174.95! If you have any questions at all, give us a call or send an email.

And no, this is not a prank, we really do have them here at our radar detector headquarters. I had one on my desk even! Check back here on our radar detector blog later this week for another very interesting item we have from Whistler as well. One that I think many of you will like a lot.

Escort SC55 Safety Camera Locator

Ok, that is not the best name for the device, but it is what Escort is calling it for now. SC55 Red Light Camera Detector / System is a bit more in-line with standard industry nomenclature. Escort SC55 will do though.

The Escort SC55 is a new addition to devices that are able to warn you about red light and speed cameras. You know, those little cameras at stop lights that are installed by crooked politicians. Even though the cameras are being removed by any city with a sense of moral responsibility, they are still around and in use in many places.

Escort Red Light Detector

There are already several devices available that use GPS coordinates combined with a list of camera locations to warn you when you are near one. That way you can be aware that any yellow light will last about .00001 seconds and you might also be involved in a crash. The first step to avoiding a trap is knowing it is there.

The Escort SC55 is here to help. Like other camera warning systems, it uses GPS location and a database. The SC55 is promising pinpoint GPS placement (not much good being warned after you go through an intersection) and an updatable, and accurate database. In fact the Escort's Defender™
Database is rather highly regarded (and is the one currently used by Escort 9500ix and BELTRONICS Pro GX65 integrated RLC / radar detectors).

We are looking forward to seeing how well the SC55 will do compared to other RLC devices currently available from Cheetah and Whistler.

The SC55 will have an optional kit to connect to certain Escort and Beltronic radar detectors. If the SC55 will work with the Redline radar detector, it could make for a very versatile protective system. The SC55 should start at around $159.95 for the base model and $179.95 with the connector kit. The SC55 will be a great way to have GPS red light warning functionality for a good price. When you realize that the cost of a red light ticket is often that much (or more), the extra preventative warning is worth it.

As soon as we have them here in our warehouse we will let all of you know. Unlike some websites, we stock every radar detector, red light camera system, laser jammer, and accessory we sell. They should be here in a few weeks.

SC 55 Safety Camera Locator sounds like a diagnostic tool for use with security cameras though.

Cruiser Accessories License Plate Frames and Covers

Some of the most popular accessories we carry are license plate frames and covers, so we are pleased to let all of you know that we have expanded our selection. The plate frames are perfect to use with the Super Protector and other red light / speed camera defense products and the plate covers work great with Laser Veil.

One of the best features of the Cruiser frames is that they do not obscure or cover license plate numbers or other plate information. This means they are to legal in most states. If you have any questions regarding the allowable usage of plate frames and covers where you live, we recommend that you contact your local DMV office.

The plate covers are very durable, and the TUF SHIELD plates are almost indestructible. If you are in an area where license plate theft is common, just add a set of locking fasteners for even more security. We have a great selection of frames, covers, and hardware available and ready to ship. Please contact us with any questions!

Radar Detectors are Illegal in Virginia, and They Will Stay That Way for Now

The bill to repeal the ban on radar detectors failed to make it through the state's legislature. So for now the use of radar detectors in Virginia will continue to be illegal.

Escort has Changed the Solo S2 Radar Detector - Well Sorta

The Escort Solo S2 Cordless Radar Detector is a favorite around here. While cordless radar detectors do not have the same performance of a "wired" model, the Solo 2 is still a very good radar detector. Also, it is perfect for motorcycles, and for those that need a detector that can easily be set-up and used with different vehicles.

Escort Solo S2 Radar Detectos

Escort has made some minor changes to the packaging of the Solo 2 model. On the left side of the picture is the old package, and on the right is the new one. The radar detector is staying the same, but it will now come with a soft case and an extra set of suction cups. The price is remaining the same at $339.95. Here at Buy Radar Detectors our opinion on soft cases is split. Many feel that it makes it easier to store, and is more rugged than the hard case. Others feel that the hard case provides better protection and is, well, nicer. We only have a few hard case models left, so if you want one, please call us at 1-800-584-1445 and specify that you want one.

Will Radar Detectors be Legal in Virginia This Week?

The bill repealing the ban on the use of radar detectors in Virginia is to be voted on again today. If the bill passes, it will then move to the state's Senate. By the end of the week it might be legal to own and use a radar detector in all 50 states.

Radar Detectors in Virginia?

In a follow-up to our last blog post, it looks like efforts to repeal the ban on radar detectors in Virginia are making some headway. According to this article the bill has now passed to Virginia's general assembly. Way to go! So should legalizing radar detectors in Washington DC be next?

January 28, 2010

Are Radar Detectors Going to be Legal in Virginia?

According to this article radar detectors may soon be legal in Virginia. Currently Virginia is the only state where having a radar detector is illegal, though they are also illegal in DC and on military bases. Virginia's ban has long been a frustration to drivers. You have to stop and take down your detector when entering the state, in fact there are even signs at the stateline warning you of this. For many people, a concealed radar detector was their only option. This is great news for everyone that drives in Virginia! We also encourage you to write to Delegate Joe May expressing your support for his plan to legalize radar detectors.

Should the Price of a Speeding Ticket be Based on Your Income?

The main reason most people have a radar detector, or a redlight camera warning system is because the fines associated with a speeding ticket, or for turning right on a redlight can be very expensive. I have met very few people that do not speed occasionally unintentionally, and those redlight cameras are designed to eventually give everyone a ticket. So a radar detector, laser jammer, or camera detector is an investment against the inevitable reality of a ticket and associated insurance premiums.

As more and more cites struggle to make money, in turn there is increased pressure on law enforcement to write more tickets, or for towns to sell their soul to a camera operator. The interesting part of all this is that there are some people that find the financial penalties a bit, well insignificant. So some countries (mostly in Europe) are now scaling the price of the fine based on the income of the driver. In this story, one such person received a $290,000 speeding ticket. He is considered a repeat offender, and is also very wealthy. To him a $200 ticket is a joke.

I wonder how long it will be before you start to hear of this in the US? While I like aspects of this, and scaling a fine to meet a person's income level is perhaps a fair approach, there is room for precedent that could be abused. Also, what would happen if all traffic fines and not just speeding tickets were treated this way? Again it would start fair, but I doubt it will make some of the outrageous fines less for most of us. We will in the end just have to pay more to local city governments because they cannot be financially sound. Many view tickets as easy revenue.

The use of paying fines to modify a person's actions, or to punish poor judgment is a good system. The amount should be enough to actively discourage people, and the risk of a ticket is a good social control mechanism. However, using tickets to make money has allowed the practice to escalate the price of an average speeding ticket to be beyond what many of us are able to pay.

In some states, the ticket for not coming to a complete stop before turning right at a redlight can result in a $450-500 ticket. I recently read on twitter about one person who said they were glad they got around $500 in gifts from their family for Christmas since they need the money to pay for a redlight ticket. With the very deceitful and corrupt practices used by some cities to make money from cameras, I wonder how long it will take for them to base the ticket off of your income? I am rather sure, the price of the tickets will not be less, they are making too much money for that. $20,000 redlight tickets perhaps? And to be clear on this, only a maniac runs a redlight on purpose. Fining them is the least of their problems.

Protecting people from expensive tickets for a lapse in judgment, inanition, or being scammed by a redlight camera vendor is why we are here. We have a large selection of radar detectors, laser jammers, redlight / speed camera warning systems and other protective items. If you have any questions about what is the best radar detector for where you live, or any other questions, give us a call or send an email.

Cobra Touchscreen Radar Detectors

Cobra really knows how to make a great interface for their radar detectors. It looks like the soon to be released XRS 9970G and XRS 9965 radar detectors will improve on their distinctive design and UI even further. Both detectors will feature a touchscreen display. You will be able to tap on the display screen and scroll through options and set your preferences.

Cobra Touchscreen Detectors!

This is a very interesting development in radar detectors. Most windshield mount detectors can be a bit, er, fiddly when trying to do something as simple as hit the mute button. Trying to actually change settings without yanking down the detectors is nearly impossible most of the time, and a very bad idea to attempt while driving. Cobra might be changing all of that, and we will be doing a detailed test ourselves.

The 9970 will offer all of the features of current top of the line Cobra windshield mount detectors including a GPS based camera warning system (with plug-in GPS locator, itself a very nice feature, and a lifetime subscription to the redlight camera warning service), POP detection, and voice alerts. The 9965 is very similar to the 9970 but does not include the GPS locator/service (though it should be available as an option).

We cannot wait to try out the new interface! It should be a great feature that we feel is rather innovative. Anything that makes detectors even more intuitive to use, and more effective tools as well, is a welcome addition.

Redlight and Speed Camera Warning Systems Reviewed

Regular readers and customers know that here at Buy Radar Detectors, we like to help you find the radar detector, camera warning system, laser jammer, etc... that is best for your personal driving needs. We work with you to research all of the products available, and we even offer services to help. We also really like independent reviewers. They often offer a perspective and analysis that helps all of us stay better informed of the many devices available. In turn we are able to provide real world opinions on different devices, and help find what is best for you.

One of the independent review sites we like here at our radar detector lab is radartest.com. There are two new articles over there that many of you will find interesting. The first article is on redlight camera databases. It provides some interesting information on how the camera databases work, as well as a comparison of some of the most common ones in use.

In the second article, there is a product comparison test between some of the leading combination radar detector / camera warning systems. If you have been thinking about buying a GPS enabled radar detector you will want to give it a look.

I think all of this warrants a new contest! Send an email to us at contest @ buyradardetectors.com (remove the blank spaces) briefly telling us about the time you wished you had a camera warning system, were saved by one, or a review of one of the systems. Your entry might even end up here on our radar detector blog, and the five best are going to win a free t-shirt (make sure to include what size shirt and a shipping address in your email).

So go and read the articles about redlight camera systems, and let us know if you have any questions!

Do you know someone that loves gadgets? Is there someone on your holiday shopping list that is looking for something unexpected? Well, they might like the Whistler XTR-220 Radar Detector. The XTR-220 is unusual in that it has a remote control. This is very helpful for people with vehicles that have large windshields or dashes, such as many SUVs.

UPDATED! Redline Radar Detector, Here Now!

That is correct! The Redline Radar detector from Escort is now here and ready to ship. The Escort Redline radar detector is a no-frills performance detector. It may have the longest detection range of any current device. Escort states that the Redline has the best detection range available of any radar detector.

The Redline has voice alerts, and a simple but clear display with brightness controls, and auto muting. One of the best features is that it uses the same magnesium case as the Bel STi Driver. This means it is completely shielded and undetectable by radar detector detectors.

If you have been waiting to get this impressive, all-out detector, or have started to do a bit of Christmas shopping, you may one to grab one of these now. It may be a short wait until the next shipment arrives from Escort. There have been a lot of calls and emails about this detector, and we cannot wait to hear what all of you think about it!

Redlight Camera Warning System Gift Ideas

Do you know of someone that spends a lot of time driving where there are redlight cameras? Well, we may have a few gifts they might like.

The Cheetah C100 Redlight / Speed Camera Detector ($224.95)is pre-loaded with thousands of safety camera GPS locations, including redlight and fixed positions speed cameras, and you can even mark up to 100 locations yourself. The C100 also has the Rescue Me feature, which when enabled, will announce your exact GPS co-ordinates. A digital compass is also included and with a press of a button, the C100 will announce your driving direction.

The Whistler RLC-100 Redlight / Speed Camera Detector ($79.99) also uses GPS locations with an on-board database of redlight and speed camera locations, and alerts you when you are near one. Another great feature of the RLC-100 is that it has a secondary power outlet so you can connect a radar detector or other 12 volt device to it. (Interface cable sold separately - Radar detectors that use a phone style jack will also need to use our Bel / Escort Barrel Power Cord Adapter).

These are a true GPS warning systems. They do not require you to use redlight camera websites for inconsistent updates, or have to constantly check your location on a phone or navigational display while driving.

Shopping for a Radar Detector to Give as a Gift?

Do you have a friend or family member that has mentioned they would like a radar detector? Well, shopping for a detector can be a rather involved task. One thing you might want to do, is check out our radar detector buyers guide. But, I thought I would pass along the detectors that I personally suggest people will like.

If your budget is under $100, then the Whistler Pro 68 Radar Detector ($99.99) is the way to go. It is probably the best detector for the price.

An upgrade from the Pro 68 is the Whistler Pro 78 SE Radar Detector ($169.95). This is one of the best performing detectors for under $200, it is very popular, a great detector, and has some great features.

Next is the Bel Professional Series RX65 Radar Detector ($339.95). We have a very detailed review here on our radar detector blog that shows why this is one of the best detectors around for any price.

If you are looking for perhaps the best traditional style radar detector, then give the Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector ($499.95) a look. The ability to block out false alerts, and a redlight camera warning system, along with amazing range and performance makes the 9500ix one of the top detectors around.

These are just a few suggestions, please call or email us with any questions you have. Our staff is ready to help you find the right gift (even if it is just for yourself).

The Use of Laser to Determine Speed Being Challenged in Some States

The use of laser devices to determine speed has been slowly growing here in the US and in other countries. Radar is still the main system used to determine a vehicles speed due to laser being more expensive and requiring additional training. Eventually, there are going to be a lot more laser systems being used, and honestly current detectors have a bit of a problem giving a fast enough warning. A laser often only needs about 1/4 of a second to clock your speed. This is why we recommend products such as Laser Veil and Blinder Laser Jammers.

As the use of lasers expands though, they are running into a few legal battles. In Chicago, the tactic of challenging their accuracy is being used to beat tickets. The same thing is also happening in Hawaii. So if you are in Chicago, or even luckier - Hawaii, and get a ticket from a laser gun, you might be able to get out of it.

In time, the use of laser will have enough supportive legal precedence built up, and questioning their accuracy in court will just not work. We will continue to look for more products to defend yourself from getting a ticket from a laser device, and offering great deals as well!

Windshield Law Might Interfere with Radar Detectors

California hates cars. They also hate the people that drive cars. At least that is how it seems a lot of the time with all of the special "rules" for cars and trucks there. Here at Buy Radar Detectors we feel for all of you drivers in California. Now a new item of legislation is probably going to be enacted. In order to reduce fuel consumption, they want automotive makers to install a new type of window glazing to lower the inside temperature of cars so that they will use air-conditioning less, and therefore less fuel.

Now anyone that has spent a summer in a southern climate will tell you, window tinting is a good idea. The problem here is that the glazing that is to be used (it uses lots of small metal particles) will also interfere with radios, phones, wireless internet, garage door openers, and yup radar detectors. It will also be mandatory on all new vehicles sold.

We are not sure how much this will effect radar detector performance, and it may just slightly reduce range and sensitivity. However, there has been a growing trend to use these types of glazes in vehicles. The radar detector makers, crafty people that they are, will probably figure out a work around to all of this.

We want to keep all of you informed though. Even if you do not live in California, it will be just a matter of time until vehicles with this glaze are in the used car market and dispersed out to the rest of us. I think most of us like new products that make driving more comfortable, and also make our cars and trucks more fuel efficient. Forcing the automakers to implement this in what reads like a very arbitrary decision though is annoying.

Radar Detector Review Contest Winners!

Everyone at Buy Radar Detectors would like to thank all of those that sent in an entry to our Review a Radar Detector and Win a T-shirt Contest!

All of the winners should be getting their t-shirts in the next two weeks. Ryan Reckard sent us the best review of the bunch, and we though all of you might enjoy it. This is the kind of testimonial that helps others who are shopping for a radar detector! We like it when we can tell customers what other people think about a product!

Review: I have owned many radar detectors, including a few Whistlers, Cobra, a Valentine1, and a few other brands. While many of these detectors do detect radar, I have found the Escort Passport 9500ix to be the best one for me. I started out with the cheap ones and eventually upgraded to the Valentine1, and now the 9500ix.

What I love about the 9500ix is the autolearn and the fact it has GPS and great sensitivity. As there are red light cameras, speed cameras, and mobile speed cameras in my city, this detector has been a life saver. The police only use radar and pacing for speeding tickets here, so this detector is perfect. If the detector starts beeping, IT IS A POLICE. I have driven all around the city in the last 6-8 months I have owned this detector and when it chirps, it is always a police or speed trap because of the awesome anti-falsing GPS.

I can't ask for a better detector, the sensitivity is great and it automatically adjusts just about anything for you. The brightness, the volume, the sensitivity, the mute under 20mph, the automute, the autolearn, anti-falsing, and city-highway selection is all automatic (which can be disabled) -- is just incredible. This detector alerts of red light cameras, speed cameras, and the mobile speed cameras are found well in advance using the anti-falsing GPS radar detecting.

If you do a lot of city driving, travel the same highway frequently, or just like to drive, this detector is perfect. GPS adds tons of features to the detector and that is why I gave up the arrows from the Valentine1 because it was useless to me when it went off every 5 seconds. Arrows on the 9500ix would make it the absolute winner, but GPS makes up for the fact you don't have 2 sensors. Think of the GPS as the extra arrow, only better.

Remember to check back again for future contest and thanks again to everyone that sent in a review!

Beltronics RX65 and Escort 8500 X50 Comparison

We get to do a lot of cool thing here at Buy Radar Detectors. When we are not conducting comparison test, trying out new products, and running contest, we also get to do a lot of research. We try very hard to match up the best radar detector for the buyer. This involves more than just asking questions, we also pay attention to what people are buying, and also the range of products they are interested in.

Two radar detectors stand out in this regard. A lot of people out there are interested in the differences between the Beltronics RX65 and the Escort 8500 X50. So, we decided to do more than just a review of features, and a quick comparison. These are both great radar detectors, but are they as similar as they appear? Which one is better overall? Many of you know that Beltronics is owned by Escort, so are they all that different under the hood?

To find this out, we are going to open up the boxes, show you what you get with each one, give a rundown on their performance specs, and then how well they each perform in independent testing. Danny just now brought me both detectors still all wrapped in plastic. So what I find in the box, is what you as the consumer would find.

The Boxes

As you can see, they both come in boxes about the same size. Yes, I am even going to compare the boxes they come in! First up is the Escort 8500. The Escort Passport 8500 X50 has a lot of "awards" and review blurbs, and even a sticker on it telling us it is the "World's Best". It also has "Super Charged Performance" At the bottom, it informs us that it is a radar, laser detector.

Bel Escort Boxes

Ok, turning round the box. Crap! That is a lot of stuff back there. I am going to just skip over the fact that it has "new extreme radar detection", some performance chart versus "Average Detectors" and the other absolute nonsense.

It does have some nice pictures of what the detector's screen looks like when I use, it can be muted, three display modes (radar is near / radar is complicated / radar is in this band and may be near), ultra-bright display so I can use it on a sunny day, and it comes with stuff.

Everything else on there is just out to overload the potential buyer with information. If it has all these patents, and detects all of these bands of radar, and a lot of cool features it has to be good! Just don't ask where the arrows are, really, that is not funny. Oh, and according to the back, yup. SUPER CHARGED PERFORMANCE!

A bit harsh, only about the packaging. I would hope that all of you by now know that a product should never be judged on the box it comes in. Just because the marketing department at Escort had too many skittles with lunch and got over enthused does not mean that there is not an well engineered detector in that super charged box.

Next is the Beltronics RX65 Professional Series. Ok, hold it right there. What is a "professional" radar detector. I doubt very much that most people that think about buying one of these drive for a living. They are not The Stig, and certainly not The Transporter. They may think they are The Bandit, or even, The Driver, perhaps at best ...Mad Max. There are a few Steve McQueens in this world, but radar detectors are low on their shopping list.

The only type of "pro" driver that may be interested is a Gumball participant, or street racers that race for cash. I suppose "Our customers may participate in potentially illegal racing activities, and need to be warned to the presence of local law enforcement." Just does not look as good on the box. Er, Professional Driver Series it is!

Ok, back to the purple box.

Well, it does look nice, and if you ignore the naming conventions nonsense, it is rather clean. There is a small quote that while exaggerative, is not too ridiculous. At the bottom is the fact that it is ULTIMATE, and a radar, laser, safety detector. Good to know what it is, just like the Escort I suppose. Ultimate does mean, there is nothing better, so it has to be the best right?

Now we look at the back. Ack! Turn it back around!

Bel Escort Boxes Back

It claims to have the longest detection range of any detector, lightning fast response times, most advanced crap, etc... All things that can be tested, all things you are kinda screwing yourself by saying if you cannot back it up. Well at least there is a picture of what the display looks like.

Inside the Boxes

Once you get past the packaging, the fact that Beltronics is owned by Escort become rather obvious. They are packaged in a very similar manner. They both have a canvas storage case containing the detector, suction cups, and mount. Under the case is the user manual, and in a side section is the SmartPlug.

Bel Escort Cases

That is it. I think for the money a second set of spare suction cups would be nice. At least there are not several advertisements and flyers for hats or something.

The Canvas Cases

I like the canvas storage case they are using. Yes case. They are using the same one, except for a different logo.

I know some people like the hard cases, but the canvas one has just the right amount of flexible "give" while still protecting the detector. You can place it under a seat, or in a storage compartment without it crushing everything else. They also seem to hold up well, since they just use a simple zipper. Some cases have a lot of clips, and plastic hinges that just break even though the actual case will last forever.

This is one area where if you like the canvas case, you get something much nicer than what comes with "higher-end" detectors.

The Suction Cups and Clips

I think we are all waiting on something better than the suctions cups that come with all detectors. There are ways to get a bit more life out of old ones, but in time you have to replace them. For the money, I think both detectors should come with a spare set of replacement suction cups.

Then the clips. Identical clips are used for both detectors. They are also rather good, at least they are not plastic. If you use a bit of care inserting them and also when placing and removing the detector they might outlast the detector itself. You could always get a dash pad, but they are not the best solution for every vehicle. Many people get tired of removing the detector and that tends to be the main reason they go for a more "permanent" installation. Can't say I blame them. ( BTW send in pics of you installation and I will send a t-shirt to the coolest ones, just send them to: contest @ buyradardetectors.com.)

The SmartPlugs

All nice and coiled up in its own section of the box is a SmartPlug. Again, this item is identical for both detectors. If you are looking for one of the reason these detector cost a bit more than others, this is one of them.

The SmartPlug does not improve performance, it is not for a "stealthy" installation, or anything like that. It does however add a new level of convenience. In many cars you can plug the cord into a lighter/outlet on the dash. You can then very easily mute it without having to reach up to the actual detector. It also has an alert light on the plug.

This can be great if the detector is a bit too vocal from time to time, or you are driving at night and place the detector in dark mode (and use the plug light for speed warnings). "Why hi there Mr. Police Officer, no there is no detector in this car at all!" Sometimes it is just too annoying to have to fiddle with the buttons on the detector to mute or dim the display. The fact that the SmarPlugs come standard with the detectors, places them in a higher-end category over other budget detectors. This is a $29.99 option to buy a SmartPlug separately.

The Manuals

I have yet to encounter a radar detector manual that I think does a good job. The manuals that come with the RX65 and the 8500 are not absolutely terrible though, and do an adequate job of explaining the basics, and a bit on how to use the detector. They are also very similar. I would like to see manual a bit more thorough, but then again, I am one of the few people that will ever read one anyway. They come with a nice tear-out quick reference guide. You can check them out for yourself. We try to have a .pdf of all of the manuals we can find here on our site.

In fact, if you are comparing a couple of detectors, I would recommend that you give their manuals a quick look. You might find the one bit of information you need to help you decide the one that is best for you.

The Contents

Bel Contents

Both radar detectors come with a nice durable case, and SmartPlug. The suction cups and mounts are as good as any, as are the manuals. So compared to a lot of other detectors, they do have some quality accessories standard in the box, and that is something they both should be proud of.

Escort Contents

Compared to each other. Well, they each have nearly identical accessories. I would hope you purchased a detector based on performance, but if the connects of the box were meant to be a tie breaker, it is all the same. Now if one of them came with a Buy Radar Detectors.com t-shirt... just saying.

The Exteriors

Bel Escort Side by Side

Here we have them side by side. I wish they both had a little less "model graffiti" on them. Just the name and model number and a bit more discreet would be fine. The cases are nice non-descript grey plastic. While they are not the tank of radar detectors, that is the Beltronics STi Driver, they are sturdy and do not feel like they could pop apart if you dropped one. On the plus side, they also will not create a 1/2 mile deep crater in the ground if you drop one like the Bel STi either.

Radar detectors are going to get knocked around a good bit, and we seldom have any complaints from these. They are built to handle changes in temperature, constant motion, and being knocked in the floor from time to time. A lot of people do not realize what an achievement it is that detectors are as tough as they are considering the components jammed in there. There is more to a good radar detector than just an antenna, a speaker, and an on switch these days.

Bel Escort Side

I feel that all radar detectors are a bit too large, but they are dealing with some very real limitations. You can only shrink the antenna so much. I would be surprised in fact if detectors get much smaller than they are now without a very big breakthrough in antenna design.

One thing that is important. Both detectors are just the right size to fit in the center storage console of most vehicles. I may like the storage case, but realistically I am not going to use it every time I take down the detector. Being able to slip it into a storage spot is very nice. Some of the detectors out there are a bit on the big size and can be hard to quickly "tuck away".

Size wise, the 8500 is slightly longer and has a tapered front so the readout is turned toward the driver. This can be a nice feature for some of you. Not so great is you live where the driver is on the right side of the car though.

The Buttons

Most of the buttons for both detectors are on the top. If you place the detector on the windshield they can be annoying to try to get to but there is not really much of an option here. The big center mute button on the RX65 is easy to use, but so is the little, almost hidden one on the front of the 8500. For some of you it may be a lot easier to use the front button than the big snooze bar on the RX65. Hopefully you can use the mute button on the SmartPlug anyway.

The city and brightness buttons on the RX65 are going to be a bit difficult to use. You will probably find it easier to take down the detector to change them. The power button is also up next to them, oops. The buttons on the 8500 are a bit easier, since they are the only buttons on the top and have some nice ergonomic little tabs.

Volume control is going to be a matter of preference. The RX65 has this snooze bar style button on top that you use to mute and change the volume. The 8500 has a wheel style control on the side. Being able to adjust the volume on a detector is often the single most used feature. For some of you, the RX65 may be easy to get to, for others the side control of the 8500 is best. I would think about where you plan to place the detector in your vehicle, then how easy it would be to use a top volume button or a side wheel when driving.

Also, if you place the detector on a dash pad, the RX65 is going to be a lot easier to use. The wheel will be too close to the mat surface and you will just be picking up the detector to adjust it after a while.

In the top center for both detectors is a release button for the windshield clip. We recommend you use this and not just yank down the detectors. It tends to wear out the release. Yes, some people just snatch them down. Then one day you are frustrated because the detector keep slipping off and falling down on the dash. Suction cups and clips are cheap to replace, but yanking it down messes up the actual case on the detector.

The Plugs

Both detectors are plugged in on the right side. The plug for the RX65 is on the front area, and the one on the 8500 is on the back area. Both use the same type of cord so this will again be a matter of personal preference. Sometimes the plugs toward the front are easier to connect and disconnect with one hand and are also easier to get to. If you are planning on hardwiring the detector or concealing the plug, then the 8500 might look much better.

The Laser Periscopes

The laser periscopes are used to redirect lasers from the rear of the detector towards the laser sensor. On the RX65 it is on the right side, and on the 8500 the left. You don't expect this not matter much do you? Good, because laser warning for the most part currently is not very good. According to where you place the detectors, and if there are any obstructions when facing the rear of your vehicle, the placement of the periscope might give you .000000001 seconds quicker warning if you get hit by a laser from behind.

The Performance

Well this covers what the RX65 and 8500 come with, and how they look. The important thing is how do they perform! For this we are going to reference testing done by the Guys Of Lidar. They are not afraid to run heads-up comparison in controlled situations. Do not trust anything you read that was created from the manufacturers. There is a lot of misleading, and convoluted data used. Give anyone enough time and they can create all kinds of graphs and charts using made up numbers.

Bel Escort Detectors

Often the manufacturer will also use formulas based off of what the device should do based on the engineering specifications. When you are out shopping for a radar detector do not trust anything that you cannot verify. This includes the manufacturer, people that get paid for reviews, online stores (Even us!) There are several websites out there that conduct independent testing. They do not get paid to do it, they have no reason to try to promote any brand over another. While many radar detector dealers try to be as factual and honest as possible, you are your own best research team. If you visit an online retail site and they have lots of performance charts or 1-4 star ratings be a bit concerned as to how they are ranking their products.

This is one reason we do not do that here on Buy Radar Detectors. There are no nifty meters or 1-5 performance dots next to every detector on out site. People want to know "what is the best?" Truth is there is no "best" single detector for everyone. They all have different features that may be much more important to you than someone else. We prefer to work with you as an individual. This does not mean that we will not have a suggestion, or do not test the detectors ourselves. Trust me we do. So if you call and ask what is the difference between "X" and "Z" we will tell you what we have observed and also what others have found out in independent testing.

We are fortunate that GOL has just finished up a round of performance test. Included was a Beltronics RX65 and an Escort 8500 X50. So which detector had the best detection range for the different bands?

  • K Band Test: RX65
  • Ka Band (33.8): RX65
  • Ka Band (34.7) RX65
  • Ka Band (35.5) RX65
  • Instant On (test one): Escort 8500 X50
  • Instant On (test two - the hard one): RX65 - barely

I heavily recommend that you go and visit their site for more details on the test. The first thing you will notice is that both detector were very close in performance. The RX65 won in every category, but only by often small amounts. Again - go and look at the test for yourself!

If at this point I was completely indecisive about buying either detector I would have to favor the RX65. It was just slightly better than the Escort in everything except instant on detection. Another thing to note, both detectors are performing very well against models that cost $100-$200 more. From that perspective both are a great value. And if you figure in the quality of the items that are included with the detector, they are an even better deal.

What Those Redlight Cameras Really Catch People Doing

"Oh, don't lean on me man 'cause you can't afford the ticket" - David Bowie

Most people do not run redlights on purpose. While this may seem like a strange fact to some, I have never encountered anyone that runs lights for fun. "I was so late for work, I just ran all the lights!" Most of these redlight cameras are being put in to give tickets to people that do not come to a complete stop when turning right on red. Most people come to a rolling stop, then turn. In fact if you do come to a stop, the person behind you will start laying on the horn.

Meanwhile, you get processed a ticket that tends to run $100. Have a nice day, drive safe!

Here is an interesting news story about just this. In Collier Florida the citizens are getting more than a bit annoyed at getting tickets.

Collier County Commissioner Jim Colletta tells WINK News that during the month of August at the intersection of Vanderbuilt Beach Road and U.S. 41, the cameras caught 507 red light violations, but 500 of those happened when drivers didn't stop before making a right on red.

Out of 507, only 7 were people that ran a light. The rest just did not come to a complete stop when making a right turn. Many cities now know that all you have to do to make some money is shorten the yellow lights, and to also ticket those turning right on red. It is pure revenue.

"I don't have any violations or citations on my driving record, so for me to even get that letter was shocking," Marjorie Burnham says.

It is not about safety, at all. It is about publically elected and appointed officials making money from their constituents. They want us out there playing bumper cars with each other, and causing road rage, while they profit.

...Burnham says she isn't taking any chances.
"I sit there and cars honk at me to move along (at a right turn), but I'm not going to because I can't afford another ticket!"

Radar Detector Comparison Test - GOL 2009 Style

Once again the Guys of LIDAR (GOL) have just completed another great radar detector comparison test. Here at Buy Radar Detectors, we love these types of radar detector test. The more information we can get about detectors in real world situations (and not what the manufacturer tell everyone) in turn, helps us enable shoppers to be more informed. We want people to buy the best detector for them, not the one with the biggest advertising budget.

This is why we have a guide to shopping for a radar detector on our site, have this blog, and have features such as our radar detector comparison tool. We only carry products that we know work, use the items ourselves on a daily basis, openly ask for customer reviews, and even supply products for independent testing.

So thanks again to GOL, for a good job! If you are a member of a group of detector enthusiast, or just want to send in a review, please do. For a limited time you might even win a t-shirt!

Beltronics STi Driver Radar Detector Has Changed!

Bel STi Boxes

That is correct, the very popular Beltronics STi Driver radar detector now has new packaging and some changes to the accessories it came with. The most obvious difference is the size of the box, we have a new one here in the picture in front of the old one. It is a good bit smaller and a very easy way to tell the two apart.

Bel STi Case

The STi does not include the direct wire SmartPlug kit and the external speaker anymore. The storage case has also been changed, it is no longer a hard case but a canvas style one. Opinions are split on the new case. Some here like the canvas one, but the old hard case was unique (and tough) if a bit large.

The coiled smart cord, manual, windshield bracket, and spare suction cups are still included in the box. The price has also come down to $469.95. If you could care less about the direct wire smart plug kit and the external speaker this will save you $30. (available separately along with other Beltronics radar detector accessories)

Bel STi Contents

We have a limited number of the original STi Drivers left, so if you want one grab it now before they are gone. Once we have sold them all we will have the new ones up on our site. If you want one of the newer ones right now (for the $469.95 price), contact us.

The radar detector itself is the same, and is still one of the best detectors around not to mention that it is undetectable. Most detectors have a "leaked signal" that can be picked by devices such as the VG2, Spectre, or Stalcar MK 3. In states where detectors are illegal to use, police are able to use these devices to identify vehicles with radar detectors. The Beltronics STi Driver uses a magnesium case and doesn't emit a signal.

Take a Redlight Camera to Court

In previous post I have discussed redlight cameras and how they are only about making money. In some areas, citizens are taking their elected government officials to court to have the cameras removed. They have realized that redlight cameras are just a money making scheme. They have nothing to do about safety. A camera is never going to make driving safer, only active police involvement will. In Brandenton Florida, the city is being sued over the fact that, according to this article:

Critics of the cameras say numerous cities in Florida, including Bradenton, are circumventing state law by putting up the cameras to make money under the guise of public safety.

Now in a counter argument, the police chief Michael Radilowski sates that:

"It is going to make a lot of money because red-light running is an epidemic here," Radzilowski said. "The bottom line is, don't run a red light if you don't want to pay a fine."

So according to the police chief, people running redlights has become an "epidemic". To fix this vehicular epidemic that has turned the intersections of Brandenton into a demolition derby, they going to just install some cameras and issue tickets. So much for public safety. Why don't they, oh, have actual police go out to these know spots of daredevil driving.

According to Bradenton Council member Marianne Barnebey:

"We wouldn't have to do this if people were obeying the laws here," she said. "But innocent people are losing their lives."

Are the people in Brandeton that bad at driving? Do they think that some camera will stop this with just a few tickets if she is telling the truth? Or are the people in charge of the safety and well being of the citizens of Brandeton a lot more interested in making money and using a lot of extreme reasoning to scare others into not challenging them.

If you live in an area with these cameras, then fight to have them removed. If the city you live in is thinking about installing them, make sure the people who propose this never get elected to anything ever again. Until then we will continue to provide redlight camera warning systems and other countermeasures to help protect you. Keep safe!

Redlight Cameras and Bumper Cars

It seems that over in Des Plains Illinois, the citizens are tired of redlight cameras turning their intersections into bumper car rides. They just do not like crashing into other people like everyone in Washington DC. From the news story:

"The problem is that people slam on their brakes when they know the intersection has a camera and the light turns yellow," said Brookman. "They won't dare go through a yellow and this causes rear-end crashes. Studies have shown that Red Light cameras lead to more crashes." He also said that drivers often approach intersections when the light is green and expect to travel through safely. However, if the light suddenly turns yellow and they're only a few feet from the intersection, they may not have time to stop unless their slam on the brakes creating a dangerous situation.

So add another city to the list that wants these things gone. Redlight cameras are put in to make money, not improve driving safety. So if your town or city is looking to have them put in, ask where the money is going, because it is not about making your drive better.

There are a lot of movies out there where someone is able to change the traffic lights which in turn causes a lot of wrecks. I wonder if the cities that install these cameras have people sitting around watching people crash into each other all day. That is worth paying them at least $100 a ticket, right?

If you want to warned about where these cameras are, we have some very affordable redlight detectors and countermeasures. They are cheaper than a ticket, may save you from paying higher insurance rates, and also avoid having to get your vehicle repaired from playing bumper cars. Be careful out there.

Blinder M27, New and Improved!

The new Blinder M27 X-Treme laser jammer is now here at our radar detector command center (also known as my desk) and is ready for shipping. This is an upgrade over previous Blinder laser jammers. It provides even better laser detection and jamming. It is also now software upgradeable, this way you will always have updated software to detect and jam all of the latest laser guns. The Blinder M27 also has multi-function/IR transponders that can be used as a parking sensor/garage door opener, or for you guys with low riding cars and trucks, a speed-bump-is-gonna-scrape sensor.

Why should you get a Blinder? While Laser Veil Stealth Coating and a good radar/laser detector is a good laser countermeasure, often the time to slow down before being clocked is just a few seconds. Being able to jam the laser is the best solution. Combine a Blinder along with a radar detector and GPS camera warning system for the best protection available. We have the Blinder M27 for $479.00, here and ready to ship out. Give us a call if you have any questions!

Speaking of a Redline and Redlights

So, has anyone else thought about taking the upcoming Escort Redline radar detector and a Whistler RLC-100 redlight camera detector and using them together? Now you might need some kind of interface cable and adapter to help keep all the wires nice and tidy. But if someone was to use both, it might make a great radar detection and GPS based camera warning system. Now if someone was to just sell the RLC-100 for a great price, and perhaps even tweet about it on twitter, that would be something.

Escort Redline Radar Detector: Just Announced

The news is now out, and some details about the new Redline Radar detector from Escort have emerged. If you have been waiting for a radar detector that is just pure all-out performance, well you now have what you have been waiting for. Here's a quote from Escort:

Our team of engineers have created the most sensitive radar/laser detector period. RedLine provides the longest range for every signal out there.

The Redline uses digital signal processing to keep the number of false alerts down while still providing long range detection. This is not an Escort 9500ix, if you place it in Highway mode, you probably do not want to be in a dense urban area. The same can be said of many radar detectors however.

Summary: High sensitivity, long range capability, shielded, no frills for $499.95.

Escort states that the Redline is capable of detecting small amounts of laser light even if the source is off-axis. Most detectors have poor laser detection capabilities, so this would be a welcome improvement. The Redline is also using the magnesium casing that makes the Bel STi Driver radar detector so popular. Yup, the Redline is shielded to make it undetectable by radar detector detectors.

Escort Redline Radar Detector

The Redline will have voice alerts, and a simple but clear display with brightness controls, auto muting, and all of the standard accessories. It looks like the travel case is a hard case and not a soft canvas bag even.

So how well will it work? The Redline is using a dual antenna design that is tuned specifically for each band. Escort says that this will provide very long range detection abilities, including against POP mode. We can not wait to see some real world test to see how it compares.

The Redline Radar Detector by Escort is going to offer the long range detection, high sensitivity usually only found in their high-end radar detector systems. This is not a radar detector for everyone, indeed it looks like it is intended to be a competitor to the Valentine One. Most people will never need the range/sensitivity, but do need more filtering options, false signal lockouts, and GPS based camera notifications.

Those that are looking for pure high performance should be a lot happier today with the introduction of what we think will be a very impressive radar detector. Contact us today to let us know what you think.

No word yet on availability. Be sure to check our blog for updates!

What is Setting Off Your Radar Detector!

Recently while driving down Interstate 485 my detector kept reporting activity every time I was near an overpass. A RADAR DRONE! Yup, some agencies place cheap radar emitters near the highway to set off an alarm. Not sure if I would call it a true false alarm. This has been going on for a while now, but it seems their use is increasing. I would even say that their use in construction zones is a good idea to help slow people down.

Ok, arguments about how truly useful these are aside, here are a few ways that detectors help to deal with drones and other false alerts.

If you have a radar detector with a multi threat display such as the Bel Professional Series RX65 or, Escort Passport 8500 X50 and you drive in an area with drones, you will be alerted if police are also nearby and trying to use the drones to hide their radar signal.

For those with radar detectors such as the Escort Passport 9500ix, they will mark and filter them out just like any other false signal after detecting them a few times.

Some of these drones use an uncommon frequency, such as X band, and can be safely manually filtered. Many radar detectors such as the Bel STi Driver radar detector also display the specific band frequency, and will help to differentiate between the band the drone uses and actual police radar.

So add drones to the list of things that will set off a detector (door openers, radar cruise control sensors, etc...)

Not a Whistler Radar Detector, a Whistler RLC-100 Redlight Detector

That is correct, this post is not about a Whistler radar detector. It is not even about a radar detector by Escort or Bel. I would like to introduce you to Whistler's foray into the world of redlight camera warning systems, the Whistler RLC-100.

The Whistler RLC-100 is a complete warning system, it compares your current GPS location with an on-board database of red light and speed camera locations and alerts you when you are near one. The database is updateable and the RLC comes with a free one year subscription. It is also very compact and takes up very little room.

Whistler RLC-100

One of the things we like most about it, it has a secondary power outlet so you can connect a radar detector or other 12 volt device to it (Interface cable sold separately - Radar detectors that use a phone style jack will also need to use our Bel / Escort Barrel Power Cord Adapter). This means fewer power cords dangling everywhere using up your car's power outlets.

This is a very affordable GPS enabled warning system. You will not be relying on a redlight camera "service" or website for inconsistent updates, or have to constantly check your location on a phone or navigation display while driving.

With more and more cities installing redlight and speed cameras, a good warning device is almost a necessity to avoid overpriced fines. Failing to come to a complete stop before turning right in some places is now a $100 ticket. Not to mention all of the yellow lights that now last only a few seconds to catch as many people as possible driving under them.

We have the Whistler RLC-100 ready to ship for $79.99!

Why Are Cities with Redlight Cameras Fining You?

A question, if the use of redlight cameras is to reduce the number of wrecks, improve safety, catch those that do not use cowardly devices, then why do they issues fines? If this is about safety, should they not make you attend a driving safety class, make you wear a funny hat, or just call and yell at you. "Drive safer, we saw you run that light, maniac!"

Ok, I know fines are a great motivator. However the people in River Forest, Il want to know "...whether the village's desire to have red light cameras was a safety or money issue." The people in River Forest wanted to lower the fines, and some interesting information slipped out.

It seems that the people who install the redlight cameras make about $36 per ticket issued, then police have to have people review and issue tickets. So for the process to be cost effective it runs up to $100 a fine.

Village President John Rigas said he'd spoken with River Forest Police Chief Frank Limon, who said there was only one type of red light violation. Whether people failed to stop on a right turn or simply ran the light, there was a violation of the law, Rigas said.

That can be a lot of money for just not coming to a complete stop to turn right on a redlight. The truth is they are using them to make money, not improve driving safety. The people selling the cameras are making even more money. So if you live in a city with cameras, make sure to tell them thanks for making the camera operators rich.

I doubt any of us want people to run redlights, but making the lights shorter to "catch" people, and putting people making a turn on red in the same category out of greed is irresponsible. Make sure you are warned about the intersections with cameras, and please contact us if you have any questions about redlight camera protective devices, or if you are looking for a radar detector.

The Best Radar Detector Under $100!

Sometimes you need a good budget radar detector. You have your eyes set on a certain hardcore radar detector, but for now you just want one for around $100. Well give the Whistler Pro 68 radar detector a look. It has a nice set of features for the money, including 3 City modes and filter modes for a reduction in false alerts, radar, laser, POP, and instant on detection, and a signal strength indicator. This may be the best radar detector around for under $100.

If You Use A Redlight Camera Warning Device You Are a Dirty Coward!

Well this story has been making its way around. Many of you probably have already read it, but for the rest of you, here is a quick summary. Essentially the police chief of Washington DC, Cathy Lanier, is saying that those who have GPS redlight warning systems such as this one are using a "cowardly tactic".

She is actually upset that people are being warned about dangerous intersections. Because that is why the police have cameras there right, to make them safer. They are not shortening the lights in order to make money are they? Are the body repair shops around DC owned by the police? Just wondering. So prove your courage to Catchy Lanier, get in some more crashes! Turn all of DC into a giant demolition derby! Wimps! So what about insurance, or repair bills, lets smash some cars!

Those that read our blog know the truth about these cameras, and our stance on them.

Ok, for the rest of the month, if you live in the DC metro area, we are giving 10% off of every product that warns of redlight cameras, and related defensive products. We will need you to call us, and the billing and ship to address needs to be in the DC area. So give us a call, and until then be careful out there.

So show your cowardice! Buy a redlight camera protective device.

A Radar Detector for Everyone!

We get a lot of questions about what radar detector is the best deal around. Anyone that reads this blog knows that we like every Whistler radar detector model, but that does not mean they have the best budget radar detector for everyone.

If you are looking for a radar detector with very fast detection capabilities, or Ku band detection we have a detector you may like. The Bel Vector 995 Radar Detector has Ku band detection and is a very good radar detector for the price. It has fast detection speeds, good filtering, and has a great informational display.

Also, if you are looking for a radar detector that can also be easily used with other defensive gear for even more protection, you will want to give the Vector 995 a look. You can add some Laser Veil for better protection from laser, and even connect it to the Cincinnati Microwave ZR4 Laser Defense System (The two are made to work together!). Later, I would add the Cheetah GPS Mirror to have complete protection from radar, laser, and cameras. This is a surprisingly affordable upgrade path for those that want to build a good protective system over time.

We currently have a special on a Beltronics 995 and Veil combo to help get you started. For $314.94 you will have a great Beltronics radar detector, and Laser Veil. Call us if you have any radar detector questions.

Time to Tax Your Driving

A news article recently caught our attention here at Buy Radar Detectors. The federal government is looking into using GPS to tax how much everyone drives. GPS devices would be placed in everyone's cars and once a month the information would be uploaded and you would be sent a bill. They plan to then repeal the tax on gasoline. The plans calls for having this in effect by 2020. Combine this with the blog post I did just a bit ago about using GPS to monitor everyone's speed for even more fun!

Red Light Cameras in the News, Again...

Readers of this blog know that I do not like red light cameras. If anything they cause wrecks since the people that install them also shorten the yellow lights. They often tell the city "shorter yellow lights means more tickets and more money!" They leave off the "...and cause more car wrecks" part. Notice I did not call these automotive accidents, nothing accidental about planned crashes.

Well over in Schaumburg, Illinois they are getting rid of red light cameras. According to a story on ars technica, Schaumburg, a suburb of Chicago, had some cameras put in to help prevent accidents. They thought they were doing a good thing, and help to make some dangerous intersections safer. The cameras did nothing, well they did make a lot of money from people making right hand turns that did not come to a complete stop.

So, people complained, the city realized that cameras were not reducing wrecks, so Schaumburg is getting rid of the cameras.

Yup, the city noticed that the cameras do nothing to improve safety. If a city wants to improve intersections, perhaps they should invest in better traffic lights and they way the intersection is designed and heavy traffic is managed. Fix the roads first! So if you have red light cameras where you live, ask them if they are all about money and why they do not care about your safety.

Until then, we will continue to provide defensive products to protect you from the cameras. Drive safe, and drive smart!

Where is that Radar Detector You Just Bought Coming From?

Those of you who have placed an order know that often we will tell you that it will ship out the same day. How can we know that? Many other online stores will just sell what they have too many of in some warehouse on the other side of the country. We don't do that here. Our warehouse is connected to our offices here in Rock Hill, SC. This means we can easily check to see what we have, make sure we only stock the newest versions, and know when new items arrive.

When I have questions on an item, I can get up, and walk over to our warehouse. I can go and pick it up, even see how many we have in stock. If there is a special request I can tell our folks in the warehouse in person. This level of communication means we can ship out your purchase very fast, keep our cost low, and not have to send multiple email and phone messages to some warehouse in another time zone.

A lot of companies out there have an "office" of sales people who read scripted messages and have to look up every question in a help desk database. Then your order is sent to another location for payment and to another for processing. Finally your order is packaged and sent out from a warehouse used by multiple businesses. Yup, the same people sending out your radar detector also just sent out a new toaster and some patio furniture as well! They are not even in the same city as the sales people, they have never even spoken with them.

Other businesses will just drop-ship an item. That is a fancy way of saying they have it sent by another company to you. You end up paying not one place, but two. Do not even get me started on people selling refurbished radar detectors as new. If they are not an authorized dealer beware, you will have no warranty, and who knows what you will get.

By keeping all of our items at one location, it enables us to have a lot more control over how we send you your purchase. We do not ship from a random warehouse having never even seen what the item looks like. We can keep our prices low, inventory current, and can provide the customer service all of you look for.

Customer Review: Whistler XTR-695

We just got a radar detector review from a customer and Danny wanted me to share it with all of you. Here at Buy Radar Detectors, we actually like to know what our customers think about all of the radar detector and protection products available. In our effort to help people find the best solution to their needs, we like to learn about everything we can. So if you have a review and would like to send it our way, please do! I can not promise it will show up here on our radar detector blog, but you never know!

So thanks to Nhan V. Nguyen of Santa Rosa, California, a Traffic Radar/Laser Countermeasures Enthusiast, for a great review of the Whistler XTR-695. I hope the rest of you like it as much as we did!

Our most appreciations: Accurate reading laser LSID with laser pps false alert lock-out feature. Accurate reading Ka RSID. LCD display with different colors assigned for different alerts and background colors. User friendly and most easy setup within seconds. Ka detection range is far superior than most RDs available on the market within the same price range. Laser detection is much better than most RDs within the same price range.

Our most frustrations: LCD display works well when driving in early evening without direct sunlight or throughout the night otherwise it's unreadable during the daytime with direct sunlight regardless mounting positions on windshield. Excessive Ka false alerts in grossly RF polluted areas. Slot holding bracket does not fit tight causing the unit bounced off and makes it harder to read the display even at night.

What we hope for: Tighter slot holding bracket like the Pro78SE. A new recessed LCD display window with much better contras and brightness. Better Ka guard filter to minimize Ka false alerts in grossly RF polluted areas.

Our suggestions to XTR-695 owners:

1. Turn Off POP reception and select filter mode to reduce Ka false alerts when you're in a highly RF polluted area.
2. Turn Off X, K and Safety radar if you know for sure your local LEOs only use Ka band radar guns. Somehow by doing this, it'd also help to reduce Ka false alerts based on our own experience.
3. XTR-695 will provide much better laser detection if it's low mounted on the windshield or if it is possible, dash mount it on driver side with unobstructed view so you can see its LCD display easier.
4. The use of Veil G-4 for headlights, fog lights, chrome plated grills, license plate or plate cover (if it is illegal to use plate cover in your home state, the use On Track Laser Shield is highly recommended) in combination of XTR-695 is a must. This option is the most affordable traffic laser countermeasures if you can't afford active laser jammer such as blinder extreme or the likes...!

Results from our own testing for XTR-695:

Excellent KaRSID alert on Ka radar guns with 33.8GHz, 34.3GHz and 34.7GHz and almost as good as our reference V1.

Excellent laserLSID alert within a distance approx. 2,500ft with accurate pps reading displayed if the unit is low mounted on the windshield or dash mounted.

A few of our random radar and laser encounters:

Incident #1: Driving through interstate 5 between San Joaquin county and Kern county both north bound and south bound, this area is known as "intense 34.7GHz Ka enforcement", XTR-695 alerted KaRSID 34.7GHz with distance approx. 1.5mile ahead.

Incident #2: Laser speedtrap on north bound Hwy101 between Marin county and Sonoma county, this area is also know to most local commuters as "deadly random laser ambush". XTR-695 alerted LaserLSID100pps from distance approx. 2,000ft or less for the 1st strike and the 2nd strike at approx. 1,700ft. At that point, we knew that lidar operator did not get our speed reading from the 1st strike and thanks to Veil G-4, On Track Laser Shield, we survived that laser ambush.

Incident #3: XTR-695 alerted KaRSID 34.3GHz constant-on from at least 1 mile behind our car. Finally motorcycle CHP officer passed us. We decided to follow him with a distance approx. 1 1/2mile, the alert continued on and finally stopped as the CHP officer disappeared on the freeway and the estimated distance was somewhere about 2.5miles.

Well, what else can anyone could ask for from a $189 radar/laser detector?

The Speed Trap Hunter YouTube Channel

The people over at the Speed Trap Hunter forum now have a Speed Trap Hunter YouTube Channel. The guy behind it all, The Speed Trap Hunter, has pioneered the style of real world testing recorded on video. Many people try to copy his original style, but no one can come close to his knowledge, experience, and integrity. These videos are great. We are not talking about just a few either, there are over 40 with more being added constantly. It does not matter if you are just looking for some truthful reviews of radar detectors or a car nut, there is something there for everyone!

Also, don't forget to go and check out the Speed Trap Hunter's forum. There you will find even more reviews, stories, automotive news, and the Speed Trap Hunter himself. There are a lot of, well, questionable products out there. Your only way to avoid spending too much money on something that does not work is by finding a rare, independent, educated reviewer. Thanks Speed Trap Hunter!

A Guide to Buying a Radar Detector, Things to Consider Before You Start Shopping

As with many things, shopping for a radar detector can be a bit confusing. This short buyers guide is aimed at helping you buy the right radar detector for your needs. A lot of websites will tell you to buy either the most expensive one, a brand they like, or just sell you what everyone else seems to order. While you may get a good radar detector that way, you probably are not getting the one you need for your specific driving requirements.

So before you even start looking at radar detectors there are five simple questions:

1. What is your price range? Don't spend more than you are comfortable spending. While top of the line radar detectors have amazing performance and great features; there are a few detectors that perform very well at sometimes half the price of a top-end model. You may not get cutting edge performance, but you will still have a quality detector at a great price.

2. Where do you drive? Different radar detectors work better in certain driving environments. Some work great on the open road, but in town they will constantly be going off due to poor filtering, or do not work as well in hilly areas. So do you drive a lot on the highway, in a dense city, where there are a lot of hills and turns? If red light or speed cameras are used in your area, you may want to consider a GPS enabled radar detector.

3. What type of radar (or laser) is most common where you drive? Many radar detectors are able to detect different bands better than others. This one may take a bit of research but may narrow down what you are looking for.

4. What features are you interested in? Are you looking for a detector that will also warn you of traffic cameras, or have voice alerts? Do you want a certain type of display? Is stealth and concealment the most important thing?

5. How old is that radar detector? Ok, you found a detector for a great price and it meets your driving needs, but how old is it? Is it several years old? You can often get a much better detector at the same price by purchasing one that is current. The manufacturers are constantly making updates to the performance of the devices. For more information on this, check out this article on radar detector firmware.

Now that you have figured out the type of detector you are looking for we have some resources and tools you may want to use. First off, our radar detector blog. We try to keep you up to date with new detectors and unbiased reviews. Next, we recommend the Speedtrap Hunter Forum. Chances are there is a post that will answer most of your questions. We also have a product smart search feature you may like, and if you want to compare two detectors, we also have a radar detector comparison tool. And don't forget the search tool at the top of the page and our radar detector help center.

We hope this guide helps you find the best radar detector for your driving needs. One that you will be glad you own. Contact us with any questions you have and we will help you find a detector (or detectors) that will provide the protection you want. We want to match up the detector with the driver, and not just email you a "performance" chart, or the sales copy off of the back of the box.

HOW TO AVOID & BEAT THE DUI / DWI RAP!

HOW TO AVOID & BEAT THE DUI / DWI RAP!

By Richard Wallace II
Author of "An Educated Guide to Speeding Tickets - How to Beat & Avoid Them!"

This is article number 6, in the continuing series of articles that I have been writing for Buy Radar Detectors. All of my previous articles can still be viewed here, so if you missed any of the fascinating articles that deal with beating speeding tickets, avoiding speeding tickets, photo camera radar, radar detectors and the bait and switch of speed detection equipment you should catch up on your reading today, you will be glad you did.

In this, the sixth article in my series, we will look at how a motorist can learn how to avoid and beat the driving while intoxicated or operating under the influence rap. Now before we get under way here, I first must tell you all why I felt that an article dealing with beating and avoiding a DWI rap was necessary. In its simplest terms, I feel the punishment does not fit the crime and it is widely unfair in its enforcement. Let me explain. You see, in all states the DUI / DWI / OUI laws apply equally to the motorist who consumes 3 or 4 drinks and then decides to drive a motor vehicle and the same for the motorist who consumes 10 or more drinks and then operates his car. The punishment and penalties are rendered the same for both motorists. It is clear to me from my over 15 years of law enforcement experience that the motorist who consumes 3 or 4 drinks is far more sober and able to operate a motor vehicle properly than the motorist who consumes 10 or more drinks. The real hazard on the roadways today is this severely intoxicated motorist, not the business man or woman who decided to have a few drinks after work and then drives home. While both of these people may be legally drunk according to the law, with the blood alcohol level being .08 in most states, which is about 3 drinks in an hour, the real threat to public safety is the severely intoxicated driver, not the light drinker. I advocate laws in all states based on the levels of total intoxication, not just if the arrested persons blood alcohol level is over .08. There are many other factors that need to be considered before we throw the book at somebody who just consumes a few drinks. Again, simply put, the punishment should fit the crime and it does not in my opinion.

In this article I will tell you a little about what the police are taught in the academy to assist them detect drunk drivers. You will learn how to avoid detection if you have been drinking and decide to drive. You will learn what to do and most importantly, what not to do when stopped by the police. You will learn why you should refuse all field tests as well as any blood alcohol test you are requested to submit to by the police. By using my strategies outlined in this article, you will probably never get convicted of drinking and driving in a court of law. And lastly you will learn how you can save your drivers license and also thousands of dollars by not paying fines and insurance surcharges.

I just want to take a minute to clarify with everyone how our shipping options work. We occasionally get emails that go something like this:

Hi. I placed an order on Thursday with 2 day delivery. It is now Monday morning and I don't have my package. Please refund my shipping.

In almost all of these cases everything is on schedule, but the customer was a little confused about how the shipping options work. To figure out when you will get your package, you can't count the day the package ships or weekends.

A "Next Day" package shipped on a Wednesday will arrive on Thursday. A "Two Day" package shipped on Thursday will arrive on Monday.

You can refer to our policies page for more details, or contact us if you have any questions.

Check It Out - A Radar Detector Blog!

Hi, this is Danny Feemster, owner of BuyRadarDetectors.com. Thanks for checking out our new weblog!

There's several reasons that we decided to start this blog. Most importantly, there's tons of great information and advice that we provide to our customers on a daily basis via the telephone and email that simply doesn't exist on our web site. A blog will provide us with an easy way to make this information available. It's also going to give us a great place to make new product announcements and post other industry news.

Over the next few days I hope to provide a few posts to address some of our more frequently asked questions, and to talk about some new products. Check back soon!
