Before you can understand how Veil works, it helps to have a basic understanding of how LIDAR (laser) works. Police laser guns release a narrow beam of light at a targeted vehicle. Portions of this light is reflected off the vehicle and back to the laser gun. From this reflected light, the laser gun can determine the speed of the vehicle.
Laser works differently than police radar, and a radar / laser detector alone is not enough to protect you. With radar guns, the actual radar signal is very wide and it bounces off just about any obstacle in its path. This makes radar comparatively easy to detect because, even with instant-on radar, your detector will typically "catch a bounce" when the officer targets another vehicle around you. Laser is a very narrow beam that doesn't "bounce". In most cases, the police officer will be targeting your car before your detector alerts you and, since the laser gun can calculate your speed in less than a second, you will not have time to respond before getting a ticket. In order for the laser gun to calculate a vehicles speed, the light has to be reflected back to the gun. Because of this, police target the more reflective areas of the vehicle. Typically this is the front license plate, headlights, or perhaps a shiny front grill. Veil works by making those reflective areas of your vehicle less reflective. Covering those areas with Veil will make your vehicle less reflective, which makes it more difficult for the laser gun to calculate your speed. This can give you an extra few seconds to adjust your speed, which is enough time to save a ticket! The darker the color of your car, the more effective Veil will be. Once you "Veil" the commonly targeted areas of your car, there is nothing left other than the paint to reflect the laser. Lighter colored cars are more reflective than darker ones, so expect better performance with a darker car. The images below illustrate what a laser gun sees when it targets your car: | ||
Untreated | Treated with Veil |
Veil has been tested and found to be effective by several independent organizations:
In RadarTest.com's Laser Veil review> Craig Peterson found that "...after 120-plus man-hours of testing it on a variety of vehicles, we can confirm that Laser Veil indeed cuts laser target-acquisition range, sometimes dramatically so."
In his test for Speed Measurement Laboratories, Carl Fors concluded: "Veil was effective in reducing a laser gun's ability to target the dark colored vehicle up to 50%."

As I live in a Police state, no use or any detectors allowed, with very poor use of speed enforcement i.e. where to place speed enforcement (traps) vs enforcing and using resources on red light running, failure to stop at stop signs etc. and preferring to use additional manpower on HOV lanes instead. This is a more lazy ticket generating schemes etc. this is my one and only option till I stealth mount a vg2 proof detector. This is BTW in Quebec. I followed some forums recommendation to use a small airbrush to apply. Went very well. Small errors clean off easy with alcohol. No real change to lens colour and texture. Now to see how well it works when I see a LIDAR aimed at me and see them looked puzzled.
This is a great product that is very effective. The only draw back is the actual application of the liquid. If not applied perfectly, the product smudges and stands out due to its inconsistency. It took me two tries, on the third license plate cover I was able to get a nice even distribution of the liquid, on the front and back of the cover. A little patience goes a long way.
While I'm sure this product will perform like it says it will to block/deflect laser beams to areas it is applied there is a significant drawback on it's application. The product runs like water, thus when you are applying it whether you have taped the surrounding area off or not it will run past the tape and onto your paint. The instructions do give a warning that after a couple of minutes of it hitting your paint you risk damaging it, however from my own experience it only took literally 15 seconds; applied, it ran past my tape and the time it took for me to walk 5 feet, grab a towel and come back to wipe it off it had already stained the paint, costing me way more than the product to repair it's damage. Another thing on application: even when using their supplied foam brush to apply it with even strokes, after it set it was sticky and bubbly, so not good. If you "are" going to apply this then I would take your lights off the car to apply them and in a air-conditioned/dust free environment (far cry from their video showing him applying it outside on a track..:/)
After multiple attempts at coating my headlights I still have a streaky finish that looks pretty bad. Coating of the number plate cover made it too dark so had to be discarded. If you have a good looking car, give this product a miss!
While messy, its still the best bang for the buck! It saved me a few days ago and I mean really saved me, considering everyone is switching to laser I'd reccomend this if you dont want to get an electronic countermeasure.
THE BEST PRODUCT INVENTED IN RECENT TIME TO REDUCE THE USE OF LASER GUNS AND THE LIKE TO RAISE REVENUE.
Easy to apply, but a little goes a long way!
