Cordless radar detectors operate on batteries instead of requiring that you
plug a power cord into your cigarette lighter. Cordless detectors are popular
because of their added convenience. If you believe you will frequently move
your detector between multiple cars, the idea of a battery powered detector may
be appealing. Motorcycle drivers may have the biggest need for a cordless radar
detector. On a bike, cords can really get in the way, and some
motorcycle's do not even have a cigarette lighter plug.
Most cordless models provide the option of using batteries or a power cord.
This is a very nice feature and can save you if your batteries die
unexpectedly. Our most popular cordless detectors are the
Escort Solo S2, the PNI
Traveller, and the Whistler
1788. Because of its combination of performance and features, the Solo
S2 could definitely be considered the best of the cordless models. If you're
looking to spend a little less, the Traveller has been shown to provide great
performance as well. The Whistler 1788 is a new model, but it is already very
popular! It is the only cordless detector to offer POP mode detection, and
rechargeable batteries with a built-in charger!
Even with all of the benefits of the cordless detectors, we do not recommend
that you buy one unless you specifically need the cordless ability. Because
cordless detectors have to be very careful about their power consumption, they
generally don't perform as well as similarly priced corded models.
